Chapter 17 - The board hearing begins

The special committee held a formal hearing regarding Vesper’s corporate and foundation roles.

Not a criminal trial.

Her lawyers attended.

Evidence:

Conflict forms.

Consulting contracts.

Emails.

Elara’s records.

Vendor testimony.

Pricing analysis.

Foundation allocations.

Vesper testified.

“Did you receive money from Greencrest while recommending Greencrest?”

“Yes.”

“Did you disclose?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I believed my consulting arrangement was separate.”

“Did the form require indirect vendor compensation?”

“Yes.”

“Did you read it?”

“Yes.”

There.

Then North Vale.

Same.

Then foundation benefits.

“Did you use the luxury travel package?”

“Yes.”

“Did you pay?”

“No.”

“Did foundation board approve?”

“I believed chair authority covered stewardship.”

“Did you document donor meetings?”

“Not adequately.”

Then Elara.

Vesper became emotional.

“She hated me.”

Maybe.

“She wanted Caelan to choose her version of family over ours.”

Maybe.

“She did not understand how relationship businesses work.”

Maybe.

Then counsel asked:

“Did any of that make her conflict analysis wrong?”

Silence.

Then Vesper:

“No.”

There.

The committee had its core.

Then she turned toward me.

“You let her turn everything into policy.”

I was not questioning her.

Still she spoke to me.

“Your father understood family.”

I answered only because counsel permitted.

“My father left us a system where nobody knew which wallet paid for what.”

Vesper laughed bitterly.

“And you think bankers love you now because you’re cleaner?”

“No.”

“Then why destroy us?”

“I’m not.”

“You opened her paper.”

“She instructed release.”

“You could have buried it.”

That sentence entered the record.

No one needed to ask more.
