Chapter 6

The camera on Corinne’s phone kept recording.

Theron watched the entire clip with Mara.

Before he arrived, Melisande practiced a sentence.

Not dramatically.

Almost under her breath.

“If you take her, I’ll file tomorrow.”

Then again:

“If you take her inside, I’ll tell the court you abandoned her.”

Corinne said:

“Use judge.”

Melisande adjusted.

“If you take her inside, I’ll tell the judge you abandoned her.”

Exactly what she later said.

Theron stared at the screen.

“They rehearsed it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mara did not answer yet.

The video continued.

Corinne attached price tags to Ione’s boxes.

At one point she asked:

“Do I really have to keep doing this?”

Melisande answered:

“He needs to see it.”

Theron’s jaw tightened.

Corinne said:

“What if he just takes her and leaves?”

Melisande:

“Then we file.”

“And if he loses it?”

A pause.

Melisande looked directly toward Corinne’s phone.

“Keep recording.”

There it was.

Still not explicit.

But close.

Then the phone fell over when Theron’s truck entered.

The angle changed.

It captured most of what followed.

Ione crying.

Theron helping her.

Corinne taunting him.

Theron dumping the handbags.

Melisande’s threat.

The guardianship paper.

Everything.

Mara stopped playback.

“They expected a confrontation.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe they expected me to damage something.”

“Yes.”

“Why put the handbags beside the wheelbarrow?”

“I can infer.”

“I want evidence.”

“Good.”

That restraint was new.

Theron did not enjoy it.

Then Mara showed him a message Corinne had sent Melisande that morning.

Camera fully charged. If he touches me, I call 911 immediately.

Melisande replied:

Do not provoke beyond what we discussed.

Theron stared.

“What did they discuss?”

The next messages were missing.

Deleted.

Forensics might recover them later.

Another message:

Remember, no marks on Ione.

Theron’s expression changed.

Mara raised a hand.

“That does not mean they planned physical harm.”

“I know.”

He forced himself to keep reading.

Corinne:

She cries just from the room stuff.

Melisande:

That’s enough.

So the plan, at least that morning, was emotional.

Strip the bedroom.

Sell belongings.

Tell Ione she was leaving.

Make her cry.

Have Theron arrive.

Record what happened.

Theron leaned back.

“They used her.”

“Yes.”

“Even if no one hit her.”

“Yes.”

That was important.

Child cruelty did not need bruises to count as cruelty.

Then Corinne’s financial records revealed another pressure point.

Her lender had agreed to postpone foreclosure if she could demonstrate stable housing and reduced expenses by the end of the month.

Moving into Ione’s trust-owned home would solve both.

No rent.

Lower costs.

Miles could remain in the same school district if residency were established there.

Corinne’s entire near-term financial recovery assumed she and Miles would be living in Ione’s house.

The plan had already spread into her lender negotiations.

Mara looked at Theron.

“This was not a casual idea.”

“No.”

“They built other decisions around getting guardianship.”

Then a forensic technician recovered one deleted text.

Corinne to Melisande:

If he breaks something on camera, is that enough?

Melisande:

Daniel said real conduct matters. We cannot fake what he chooses to do.

Daniel Crowe’s legal advice had been transformed into something uglier.

He had said:

Do not manufacture evidence.

May you like

Melisande had apparently heard:

Create the circumstances and let Theron manufacture it himself.
