Chapter 9

The full audit weakened Melisande’s financial defense.

Some caregiving reimbursements were completely legitimate.

Meals.

Gas.

School pickup.

Overnight care.

The auditors said so.

That mattered.

The improper portion was smaller than Theron’s anger initially imagined.

Approximately $26,000 over eighteen months.

Inflated overnight claims.

Duplicate housekeeping.

Transportation Corinne actually provided for free.

Serious.

Not a stolen fortune.

The future plan mattered more.

Melisande’s spreadsheet projected:

Trust-funded household reimbursement.

Corinne as paid secondary caregiver.

Northfield tuition.

Therapeutic transportation.

Home maintenance.

Estimated first-year trust costs:

$186,000.

Corinne’s projected personal savings from moving into the house:

About $46,000.

Enough to postpone her financial collapse.

Melisande’s guarantee exposure would also become easier to manage if Corinne stopped paying rent and avoided immediate foreclosure.

But the audit found something that sharpened motive beyond money.

Three months earlier, Theron had mentioned moving.

Not across the country.

Forty-five minutes away.

Closer to Ione’s school and his main project office.

The trust company had been discussing whether to sell the large house and purchase a smaller one for Ione.

No decision.

Melisande hated the idea.

She told the trustee:

That house is Ione’s connection to Laurel. Theron cannot uproot her because his job is inconvenient.

On its face, not unreasonable.

Privately, she told Corinne:

If he moves her, we lose the only place all of us can still call family home.

There.

Control.

The trust residence had become the emotional center Melisande believed should remain under family influence.

Theron viewed it as Ione’s asset.

Melisande viewed it as family territory.

Then Mara received the final pre-twist evidence.

A draft declaration written by Melisande for the guardianship hearing.

It described the driveway confrontation as if it had already happened.

But the file was created the night before.

Paragraph:

When confronted regarding reasonable plans for Ione’s temporary placement, Theron became physically aggressive, destroyed Corinne’s personal property, and demonstrated the volatility I have feared.

No driveway event had occurred yet.

No handbags were muddy yet.

The paragraph was written in advance.

Mara looked at Theron.

“That is not a contingency note.”

He stared.

“She wrote the result.”

“Yes.”

There was more.

A message from Melisande to Corinne:

If he does nothing, we use abandonment. If he explodes, we use instability. Either way, file Friday.

Theron sat back.

That was the architecture.

The forged consent was never meant to stand alone.

The driveway confrontation was never just family cruelty.

And Ione’s bedroom was never merely needed for Miles.

Everything had been arranged so Theron’s response would decide which version of the story Melisande filed.
