Chapter 10 - the awakening

At Mount Sinai, Richard sat beside the bed in the private intensive care room.

The only sound was the rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor and the soft hiss of the mechanical ventilator. On the bed lay Eleanor Whitmore. Her face was pale, hollowed by years of struggle and illness, but the high cheekbones and hazel eyes beneath fluttering lids were unmistakably Whitmore.

Richard held her thin, calloused hand between his own. A man who had bought and sold shipping conglomerates, who had looked presidents and prime ministers in the eye without blinking, had tears streaming silently down his weathered cheeks.

"I'm sorry, El," Richard whispered, his voice cracking. "I stopped looking. God forgive me, I stopped looking."

Eleanor’s fingers twitched faintly.

Richard stiffened. He leaned forward, holding his breath. "Eleanor?"

Her eyelids fluttered open, heavy and disoriented. The harsh hospital lights made her squint, but when her gaze drifted down and found the silver watch on Richard’s wrist, and then the small blue star inked on his flesh, her eyes widened.

A ragged, muffled sound came from behind the plastic oxygen mask.

Richard immediately stood up, pressing the nurse call button while gently resting his hand on her forehead. "Don't try to talk, sweetheart. I'm here. Dad is here."

Eleanor reached up with trembling strength, her fingers clawing weakly at the front of Richard’s tuxedo shirt. She pulled him closer, shaking her head with desperate urgency.

She pointed toward the door.

"What is it, Eleanor? What's wrong?" Richard asked.

With agonizing effort, Eleanor pulled down the edge of her oxygen mask. Her voice was barely a dry rattle, like dead leaves on asphalt.

"Lucy..." she breathed. "They... took... Lucy..."

Richard froze. "What do you mean? Lucy is safe in the waiting room with my guards."

"No..." Eleanor wheezed, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes. "In London... Julian... he found us three years ago. He told me... if I ever came back... he would put her where nobody... would ever find her..."

The door to the intensive care room swung open.

Richard turned, expecting the attending nurse.

Instead, standing in the doorway was Thomas Vance, dressed in a doctor’s white lab coat, holding a silenced pistol against his side, shielded by the fabric of his coat.

Behind him in the corridor, Richard’s two private guards lay slumped unconscious against the waiting room chairs.

"Step away from the bed, Mr. Whitmore," Vance said calmly, closing the door behind him and turning the deadbolt.
