Chapter 11 - blood and ink

Richard didn't step back. Despite his sixty-eight years, the broad-shouldered patriarch rose to his full height, his massive frame shielding Eleanor entirely from Vance’s line of sight.
"You were a sergeant in my private detail for twenty-five years, Thomas," Richard said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "I paid for your mother’s cancer treatment. I put your children through college."
"And Julian offered me ten million dollars and a private island in Belize," Vance replied without a trace of remorse. "Sentimental loyalty doesn't pay for retirement, Richard."
Vance raised the silenced pistol, aiming directly at the center of Richard’s chest. "Julian’s flight lands in three hours. He wants this cleaned up before the morning market opens. Step aside. The woman goes first, then you. We'll stage it as a tragic family murder-suicide driven by grief. The press will eat it up."
"Where is the girl?" Richard demanded, not flinching from the barrel of the gun.
"Safe in a van downstairs," Vance smirked. "Bound for a private freighter in Newark. By tomorrow night, she’ll be in international waters."
Suddenly, the frosted glass window of the intensive care door shattered inward with an explosive crash.
A heavy brass fire extinguisher slammed straight into Vance’s shoulder, knocking him off balance. The silenced pistol discharged with a muffled *thwip*, the bullet burying itself harmlessly in the acoustic ceiling tile.
Claire Dawson lunged through the broken door frame, tackling Vance’s gun arm with all her weight, driving him into the tiled floor.
Vance roared in pain, swinging his scarred fist to strike Claire, but Richard moved with the blinding speed of a man possessed. He grabbed Vance by the collar of the lab coat, hauled the two-hundred-pound security chief off the floor, and slammed him spine-first against the concrete wall.
The gun clattered across the linoleum.
Richard’s weathered hands locked around Vance’s throat like twin vices of steel. "Where is my granddaughter?"
Vance gasped for air, his face turning purple, his heels kicking uselessly against the wall. He pointed weakly toward the window overlooking the ambulance bay.
Arthur Hayes hurried into the room through the shattered doorway, holding a service revolver he had taken from the unconscious guards in the hall. "The blue cargo van by the loading dock, Richard! Claire saw it on our way in!"
Richard didn't hesitate. He threw Vance to the floor with enough force to knock the wind out of the traitor, grabbed Arthur’s revolver, and sprinted down the emergency stairwell.

Claire knelt beside Eleanor’s bed, taking her trembling hand. "He’s going to get her, Eleanor. Your father is going to bring her back."
Eleanor looked at Claire, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, and weakly nodded.
