Chapter 9 - the second signature

The second signature on the wire transfer authorization was not Richard Whitmore, nor was it Victoria.
It was *Margaret Hayes*.
Arthur Hayes’s late wife, who had served as Richard Whitmore’s personal executive secretary for thirty-five years before passing away a decade ago.
Arthur stared at his wife’s familiar handwriting, his knees buckling. He caught himself on the edge of the iron safe, his breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The man who had been the pillar of the Whitmore empire for half a century looked suddenly broken, aged twenty years in a matter of seconds.
"Arthur?" Claire reached out, steadying his arm. "Are you alright?"
"Margaret..." Arthur whispered, his voice trembling violently. "She knew. All those years. When Richard was drinking himself to death in this very study, when I spent nights searching missing persons registries across Europe... Margaret had the files right in her desk."
"She might have been forced," Claire said gently. "Julian could have threatened her."
"No," Arthur said, shaking his head with bitter certainty. "Margaret never did anything she wasn't compensated for. She was fiercely protective of Julian. She practically raised him after Richard’s wife died."
He closed the blue binder with a hollow thud.
Suddenly, the lights inside the vault flickered and went out.
The hum of the climate-control fans slowed to an eerie, descending whine. The emergency red lights along the floor snapped on, bathing the concrete vault in a crimson glow.
A metallic click echoed from the doorway.
The heavy steel door of the vault slowly swung shut.
"Arthur!" Claire lunged forward, but the six-inch-thick steel slab slammed home with a deafening boom. The hydraulic locks engaged, sealing them inside.
From the external intercom speaker mounted above the frame, Victoria Whitmore’s voice crackled through the static.
"You really should have stayed upstairs, Miss Dawson," Victoria said, her tone dripping with chilled condescension. "And you, Arthur... you've outlived your usefulness to this family. Julian will be landing at JFK in four hours. By the time anyone checks this basement, the narrative will already be set."
"Victoria!" Arthur shouted, pounding his fist against the reinforced steel. "There are backup oxygen systems! You won't get away with this! Richard is at the hospital with the police!"
"Richard is an old man whose grief has made him incompetent," Victoria replied smoothly. "By morning, the board will declare him medically unfit to manage the estate. Julian will assume power of attorney. As for that little girl at Mount Sinai... Vance is on his way there right now to collect her."
Claire’s blood ran cold. "Lucy!"
"Goodbye, Arthur," Victoria said.
The intercom clicked off.

Inside the sealed vault, the red emergency lights hummed quietly. Claire turned to Arthur, her panic rising, but the old attorney didn't look defeated. Instead, he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key.
"Did you think I would design a security vault without a manual override?" Arthur said, his eyes burning with cold fury. "There is a service tunnel behind cabinet four that leads directly to the carriage house. We have forty minutes before Vance reaches that hospital."
