Chapter 13 - the confrontation at the terminal

The private terminal at JFK was quiet and sleek, bathed in cold LED lighting.
A Gulfstream G650 touched down on the rain-slicked runway, taxiing smoothly toward the private hangar. The airstairs lowered, and Julian Whitmore stepped out.
At thirty-eight, Julian looked like a younger, more refined version of his father—sharp features, tailored Italian wool coat, perfectly groomed hair, and cold, calculating blue eyes. He carried a leather briefcase, his stride confident and brisk.
He walked into the VIP lounge, expecting his usual security detail and a waiting limousine.
Instead, the lounge was filled with ten uniformed Port Authority police officers, two federal marshals, and a state prosecutor.
Sitting in a leather armchair in the center of the lounge was Richard Whitmore.
Next to Richard stood Arthur Hayes and Claire Dawson.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His confident expression faltered for a fraction of a second before he smoothed it over with a practiced, arrogant smile.
"Dad," Julian said smoothly, unbuttoning his coat. "What is all this? I heard there was an incident at the gala tonight. I took the first flight out of Heathrow to help you manage the fallout."
"Sit down, Julian," Richard said. The tone was deceptively quiet.
Julian glanced at the federal marshals standing near the exits. "I'm not sitting down until my counsel arrives. Where is Victoria?"
"Victoria is currently in a holding cell at the Manhattan Detention Complex," Arthur Hayes said, stepping forward. "She attempted to leave the country on a chartered flight to Zurich two hours ago. Homeland Security flagged her passport."
Julian’s jaw tightened, the mask beginning to crack. "Victoria acted alone. Whatever she did, whatever scam she was running, I had no knowledge of it. I've been in Europe for six months."
Richard reached into his jacket pocket and tossed a thick sheaf of papers onto the glass coffee table between them.
The documents spread out under the bright lights: wire transfers, Swiss bank statements, forensic handwriting analyses, and the original 1999 Zurich fire report signed by Julian and Margaret Hayes.
"You signed the wire transfer that paid Vance to lock your sister in a burning clinic twenty-five years ago," Richard said, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "You were nineteen, Julian. She was your sister."
Julian stared at the documents. The arrogance drained from his face, replaced by a cold, bitter venom.
"She was weak!" Julian hissed, taking a step toward his father. "She wanted to give away the family fortune to charities and artist foundations! She was going to split the trust in half and bankrupt the empire grandfather built! You were always too blind to see it, Dad. You loved her more than you ever loved me!"
Richard stood up. The difference in size and presence was overwhelming. Julian instinctively took a step back, but two federal marshals moved behind him, blocking his path.
"I gave you everything," Richard said, his voice thick with heartbreak and absolute disgust. "I gave you my name, my business, my trust. And you threw your sister into the gutter and tried to murder your own niece."
Julian scoffed, a sneer twisting his lips. "You think you've won, old man? Eleanor is a dying invalid. That little bastard child has no legal claim without an ironclad DNA match, and I still control thirty percent of the board voting shares. You can't touch me without destroying Whitmore Enterprises."
Arthur Hayes stepped forward, a thin, triumphant smile touching his lips.
"Actually, Julian," Arthur said calmly, "twenty minutes ago, Eleanor Whitmore signed an emergency power of attorney and a certified legal affidavit before two state judges and the hospital ombudsman. And while you were in the air, the board held an emergency meeting."
Arthur pulled a legal decree from his briefcase and laid it on top of the pile.
"By unanimous vote of the board of directors, you have been stripped of your title as CEO, your shares have been frozen under the Federal Corrupt Practices Act, and you are officially terminated."

The federal marshals stepped forward, their handcuffs gleaming under the LED lights.
"Julian Whitmore," the lead marshal announced, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and wire fraud."
