Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Grand Bellevue Hotel was bathed in vibrant, golden light. Crystal chandeliers suspended from vaulted gold-leaf ceilings cast brilliant reflections across the polished white marble floor. Society elites in bespoke tuxedos and designer gowns sipped vintage champagne, their laughter drifting above the gentle strains of a live string quartet. It was the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala, the single most exclusive event on Manhattan’s social calendar.

Among the crowd, Vivienne Cross commanded the room effortlessly. At forty years old, she was the undisputed queen of high society—elegant, calculating, and vicious behind a flawless smile. Her fair, rosy complexion was set off by a sweeping crimson evening gown, paired with blinding diamond earrings and a thick diamond bracelet that caught every beam of light.

She was conversing with a circle of real estate tycoons when a broad-shouldered man walked quietly into the ballroom.

He did not fit the room’s flash and opulence. Dominic Valerio was in his late sixties, built like a fortress with a rugged, battle-hardened jaw and deeply masculine presence. He wore a simple, unbranded dark suit without a luxury watch or flashy pocket square. Yet, his piercing, frighteningly calm gaze held an authority that made those who caught his eye step back instinctively.

Dominic walked slowly toward the elevated VIP table near the front of the room.

Vivienne noticed him immediately. Her lips curled into a smirk of pure disdain. Stepping directly into his path, she picked up a full glass of champagne from a waiter’s silver tray.

Without a second of hesitation, she tipped the glass forward, pouring the golden liquid straight over the lapel and chest of Dominic’s suit jacket.

"Know your place and wait outside!" Vivienne said, her voice dripping with sharp, effortless arrogance.

Dominic stopped. He didn't flinch or raise his hands. He simply stood there as the cold liquid soaked through his fabric, his rugged face remaining completely unreadable.
