Chapter 4

By midnight, the gala had collapsed into chaotic whispers. The city's elite fled the hotel in quiet panic, desperate to check their financial ledgers and political connections.
Inside her private penthouse suite on the top floor of the hotel, Vivienne paced furiously across the plush oriental rug. The red mark on her cheek had faded into a rosy blush, but her mind was spinning out of control.
"How is this possible?!" she hissed into her encrypted cell phone, her voice shaking with rage. "He’s been gone for ten years! The court declared him legally inactive! My family signed the management lease for this entire building three years ago!"
On the other end of the line, her lead corporate attorney sounded pale through the speaker. "Vivienne, listen to me very carefully. The management lease your father signed was a temporary stewardship agreement. It contained a explicit clause: the moment Dominic Valerio sets foot on the property, all executive power reverts to him instantly."
"We have forty percent of the operating equity!" Vivienne screamed, clutching her diamond bracelet so hard her knuckles turned white.
"You have forty percent of the management company's debt," the attorney corrected flatly. "Valerio owns the deed. He owns the building. He owns the debt. If he decides to exercise his clawback option tonight, your family loses everything before the sun comes up."

Vivienne dropped the phone onto the velvet sofa. She looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing Manhattan skyline.
She had spent her entire adult life climbing to the pinnacle of wealth and power, believing her intelligence and cruelty made her invincible. Now, a ghost from the past had walked into her world and shattered her illusion in less than five minutes.
