Chapter 10

Vivienne turned without saying another word, walking slowly out of the library, her head bowed in complete surrender. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing her out of the world of power forever.

Dominic sat alone in the dim light of the library, listening to the soft patter of rain against the high arched windows.

A moment later, a hidden door behind the bookshelf clicked open. A tall, battle-hardened man in a tactical dark coat stepped into the room, holding an encrypted satellite device.

"Boss," the man said in a low, respectful tone. "The Cross family asset reclamation is complete. But we just received a signal from the syndicate back in Chicago."

Dominic did not look surprised. He raised his eyes calmly. "What did they say?"

"They heard you surfaced in Manhattan last night," the operative replied, his face grim. "They think you've grown soft after ten years in hiding. They're sending three teams across the state line to reclaim the eastern territories."

A quiet, dangerous smile touched the corners of Dominic's rugged mouth. He stood up from his desk, his massive frame casting a long shadow across the room.

"Let them come," Dominic said softly, his voice carrying the calm, terrifying weight of a storm about to break. "It's time they remember why I took the throne in the first place."
