Chapter 2

A subtle ripple of amusement passed through the nearby guests. Several wealthy onlookers chuckled softly behind their silk napkins, watching the strangely calm man in the simple suit standing drenched in front of the city's most powerful socialite.
Dominic unbuttoned his soaked jacket calmly. With slow, deliberate movements, he removed the jacket and draped it over his arm. His expression did not change by a fraction. His eyes remained fixed on Vivienne, cold and steady as granite.
Seeing no panic or humiliation in his eyes, Vivienne felt a sharp prick of irritation. She raised her manicured hand, pointing a sharp finger toward the distant service door near the kitchens.
"Get out before you embarrass me!" she spat, stepping closer to drive the humiliation home.
Dominic took half a step forward.
CRACK.
The sound of his heavy, open-handed slap resonated through the cavernous ballroom like a thunderclap.
The sheer velocity of the impact sent Vivienne spinning sideways. Her crimson heels tangled in the train of her dress, and she crashed hard into a massive, three-foot-tall decorative floral arrangement. The heavy ceramic vase wobbled, tipped, and shattered violently against the marble floor. White lilies, red roses, and sharp ceramic fragments scattered across the polished stone.
The laughter died instantly. The string quartet stopped mid-note. The entire ballroom fell into a suffocating, terrifying silence.
Before Vivienne could pull herself up from the scattered petals, footsteps hurried across the floor. The hotel manager—a fifty-two-year-old man dressed in an immaculate black suit and formal white gloves—rushed through the crowd toward the scene.
Vivienne glared up from the floor, expecting the manager to call security and have the intruder dragged out in chains.

Instead, the manager stopped two paces in front of Dominic. He adjusted his stance, pressed his white-gloved hands to his sides, and bowed deeply from the waist.
"Welcome back, Mr. Valerio," the hotel manager said, his voice trembling with profound respect.
