Chapter 2 - The Hidden Photograph

The heavy silence in the private dining room was broken only by the steady hum of the rain outside. The scholars sat frozen in their leather chairs, staring in utter disbelief as the powerful billionaire stood before a teenage server.
Dominic held the faded photograph between his broad fingers. He looked down at the image of William Hart—a handsome, brilliant scholar with intense blue eyes—standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a twenty-eight-year-old Dominic.
"William Hart was my research mentor and my closest friend twenty years ago," Dominic whispered, his deep voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "He vanished fifteen years ago after our expedition in Alexandria... taking his master research with him."
Olivia’s eyes filled with sudden, stinging tears. She looked at the photograph of her late father, recognizing the warm, intellectual intensity in his eyes.
"My father died two years ago, Mr. Russo," Olivia whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "It was a hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn. I've been living in a foster home and working night shifts at this restaurant ever since."
Dominic’s jaw set like iron. A cold, protective anger surged through his chest. He turned toward the table of scholars, his dark eyes burning with absolute authority.
"The meeting is over," Dominic announced flatly. "Leave the room."
Professor Whitman stood up, adjusting his glasses. "Dominic, wait! If this girl truly knows the cipher, my team can supervise her—"
"I said leave, Charles," Dominic growled softly, a lethal thunder in his tone that made the elder professor freeze.
Within two minutes, the scholars gathered their portfolios and exited the room, leaving Dominic and Olivia alone under the warm light of the chandelier.
Dominic walked over to the side table, picked up Olivia’s silver serving tray, and set it down. He looked down at the fourteen-year-old girl with an expression of profound devotion.
"Your father saved my life in Alexandria, Olivia," Dominic revealed softly. "Everything I built—Russo Industries, my shipping empire—was funded by the discoveries we made together. William hid this journal because he knew dangerous men were hunting his work."
Dominic reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a sleek black leather phone. He dialed his head of private security. "Marcus, bring the armored sedan to the rear entrance. I am bringing William Hart's daughter home to the Fifth Avenue penthouse."

Olivia looked up at the towering billionaire, her brown eyes filled with hesitant trust. "Mr. Russo... my father left me a small wooden box before he died. He told me that if I ever met a man named Dominic, I should give him the key."
Dominic’s breath locked in his chest as he realized the secret William had buried ran far deeper than a single journal.
