Chapter 1 - the restaurant date

The warm amber glow of crystal chandeliers hummed over the polished dark oak and velvet leather of an exclusive Manhattan dining room. High above the bustling, rain-slicked avenues, the atmosphere was subdued, wealthy, and quiet.

In a secluded private booth near the back, Dominic Moretti sat alone. Tall, muscular, ruggedly handsome, and possessing an intense but controlled presence, the feared Mafia boss leaned back against the plush leather. His dark hair was slicked back, his jaw framed by a trim layer of light stubble, and his open-collar black dress shirt revealed the edge of dark tattoos along his collarbone. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a luxury watch gleaming softly on his wrist, and polished leather shoes. He rested his hands around a simple cup of black coffee, his dark eyes observing the quiet restaurant with frightening calm.

Suddenly, the silence was broken by the light, rhythmic patter of small patent-leather shoes.

A five-year-old girl walked into the dining area entirely by herself. She was adorable and fearless, with curly brown hair tied with a crisp lavender bow, wearing a pretty lavender dress beneath a small red coat. Under her arm, she held a worn, well-loved stuffed rabbit named Mr. Buttons.

Without a shred of hesitation or awareness of danger, the little girl marched straight up to Dominic’s private booth, climbed up onto the leather seat across from him, and placed Mr. Buttons carefully on the table.

Lily smiled up at the formidable man with bright, innocent brown eyes.

"My mommy couldn’t come, so I’m her date," Lily announced cheerfully.

Dominic looked stunned, his dark eyes widening just a fraction. Yet he stayed completely calm, his expression shifting into a quiet, curious composure. He motioned to the waiter, ordering a rich, warm cup of hot chocolate with extra whipped cream.

Minutes later, Lily happily sipped the hot chocolate, her little boots swinging beneath the table, while the powerful Mafia boss listened to her chatter with unexpected, gentle patience.

"You’re nice," Lily said, wiping a small speck of whipped cream from her lip with her sleeve. "Mommy said this place was fancy, so I came instead."

"Did she now?" Dominic murmured, his deep, smooth voice low and attentive. "And where is your mommy?"

Before Lily could answer, the glass doors of the restaurant burst open.

Emma Carter rushed inside, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. A widowed ER nurse in Manhattan, Emma was exhausted, beautiful, and protective, with a quiet sadness lingering beneath her composure despite her fair, rosy cheeks. Her dark brown hair was tied back in a quick, practical style, and she wore simple work scrubs underneath a neat winter coat, looking utterly rushed and distressed.

Her eyes swept the room in pure panic until she spotted her daughter sitting inside the shadowed booth.

Emma hurried across the floor, dropping to her knees beside the table and pulling the little girl into a tight, desperate hug.

"Lily! What were you thinking?" Emma asked, her voice shaken and breathless with relief. "You can't just run off like that!"

Lily smiled brightly, pointing a small finger proudly at Dominic, who sat across the table watching them with an unreadable, steady gaze. Emma flushed in deep humiliation, turning to apologize to the striking man in the black suit.

"Mr. Dominic bought me hot chocolate, and I told him about you," Lily declared proudly.

Dominic rose slowly from the booth, his broad frame towering with quiet power, his dark eyes locked onto Emma.

Emma froze as her daughter began happily listing private details about her mother, counting each point carefully on her small fingers.

"That you sleep with the TV on when you’re sad… that you sing bad in the shower… and that you cry after you think I’m asleep," Lily listed innocently.

Emma went pale, her chest tightening in embarrassment and shock as she held Lily close. But before Emma could drag her daughter toward the exit, Lily smiled up at Dominic and offered one last, cheerful thought.

"I told him why Daddy isn’t coming back too," Lily said.

In an instant, Dominic’s expression changed. The polite, distant curiosity vanished, replaced by an expression far darker, deeply intense, and frighteningly familiar.

Dominic stepped closer, looking directly into Emma’s wide brown eyes.

"Your husband was Daniel Carter… wasn’t he?" Dominic asked quietly.

Emma froze, the air leaving her lungs completely.
