Chapter 4 - whispers in the hospital

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the penthouse suite, casting warm golden light across the polished marble.

Emma had barely slept. She sat at the wide glass dining counter, dressed in her simple nurse scrubs, sipping a fresh cup of coffee provided by Dominic’s private house staff. Lily was fast asleep in one of the luxury guest bedrooms, wrapped in soft silk blankets with Mr. Buttons tucked under her arm.

Dominic walked into the kitchen, wearing a fresh tailored suit, his dark hair neatly slicked back. He looked immaculate, powerful, and completely in control.

"You aren't going to work today," Dominic stated as he picked up an espresso cup.

Emma stood up immediately, setting her coffee down with a sharp clatter. "I have a twelve-hour shift at Bellevue, Dominic! I am an ER nurse. If I call in sick without notice, patients suffer, and I lose the income that feeds my daughter!"

Dominic watched her with calm, dark eyes. "Emma, the people who murdered Daniel have realized I placed a protective tail on your apartment last night. They know I am involved now. Stepping into a public hospital makes you a sitting target."

"I am not going to hide in your golden cage while my life falls apart!" Emma insisted, her cheeks flushing rosy with anger and determination. "I have lived three years without your help, Mr. Moretti. I can take care of myself!"

Dominic stared at her for a long, quiet second. Instead of anger, a faint trace of dark respect flickered in his eyes. He appreciated her courage, even if her stubbornness frustrated him.

"Fine," Dominic said smoothly. "You go to work. But my men will occupy the floor above and below the ER. And Marcus will drive you."

Two hours later, the Bellevue Hospital Emergency Room was operating at its usual chaotic pace. Ambulances arrived with flashing lights, nurses rushed between trauma bays, and doctors called out orders.

Emma threw herself into her work, trying to drown out the terrifying truth Dominic had dropped on her life. She checked vitals, administered IV lines, and comforted crying patients. But every time she glanced toward the glass entrance doors, she spotted two tall men in crisp black suits standing quietly near the security desk—Dominic’s guards, watching every move.

At 2:00 PM, a delivery driver dressed in a plain blue uniform approached the triage desk, holding a small clipboard and a sealed manila envelope.

"Emma Carter?" the driver asked flatly.

"Yes," Emma said, stepping forward.

"This came for you. Priority courier."

Emma signed the clipboard, taking the envelope. The moment her fingers touched the paper, she felt something hard and rectangular inside. She walked into the quiet breakroom, locking the door behind her, and tore open the seal.

Inside was a small, silver flash drive and a handwritten note on plain yellow paper:

Daniel's debt isn't paid. Stop hiding behind Moretti, or the girl pays first.

Emma dropped the note, her breath catching in her throat as a wave of icy terror washed over her.
