Chapter 10 - the final threshold

Three months later, the spring sun shone brightly over Manhattan, illuminating the lush green canopy of Central Park.
In a quiet, sunlit corner of the park near the Conservatory Water, five-year-old Lily ran across the grass, her lavender dress fluttering in the breeze as she steered a small remote-controlled sailboat across the sparkling pond.
Sitting on a wooden park bench nearby, Dominic Moretti looked relaxed and remarkably happy. He wore a sharp dark blue suit with an open collar, his dark hair catching the warm sunlight.
Beside him sat Emma, looking radiant in a simple, beautiful pale yellow sundress, her brown hair falling loosely around her shoulders. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with health, and the quiet sadness that had once shadowed her eyes had vanished entirely, replaced by deep, vibrant joy.
Dominic held Emma’s hand in his large, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.
"She loves this park," Emma said softly, watching Lily laugh as her sailboat caught the wind.
"I bought the property overlooking this terrace yesterday," Dominic replied smoothly, a subtle smirk touching his rugged lips.
Emma turned her head, looking at him with wide, amused brown eyes. "Dominic Moretti! You bought an entire residential building just because Lily liked the sailboat pond?"
"I bought it because my family deserves the best view in New York," Dominic corrected gently, his dark eyes locking onto hers with deep, undeniable devotion.
Emma’s heart melted. She leaned in, pressing a soft, sweet kiss against his cheek. "You spoil her."
"I spoil both of my girls," Dominic murmured low, turning his head to capture her lips in a deep, tender kiss that sealed their bright new future together.
As they embraced in the warm afternoon sun, Marcus walked quietly up the stone path, holding a sealed black leather portfolio stamped with an international wax seal from London.
Marcus stopped near the bench, offering a respectful nod.
"Boss," Marcus spoke low. "This just arrived via diplomatic courier from the European Directorate. It's regarding Daniel Carter's former assignment in overseas intelligence."
Dominic paused, taking the heavy portfolio into his hand.
He unsealed the wax stamp, sliding out a thick document written in gold script. Attached to the top corner was a small, vintage photograph of a young Daniel Carter standing beside a high-ranking European diplomat—and written at the bottom was a final, shocking directive that had never been disclosed to American agencies.
Emma looked over Dominic’s shoulder, her eyes widening as she read the top line of the document:
Directive 16: In the event of Operative Carter's termination, full guardianship of the European Sovereign Trust passes to his surviving bloodline... under the joint custody of Dominic Moretti.
Dominic looked up from the document, his sharp eyes meeting Emma’s in profound, breathtaking surprise.
"What does it mean, Dominic?" Emma asked softly, her breath catching in her throat.

Dominic looked across the sunny lawn at five-year-old Lily, who was happily waving at them from the water's edge, holding Mr. Buttons high in the air.
"It means, my love..." Dominic whispered, a dark, brilliant smile spreading across his rugged face, "...that our little girl's story is just beginning."
