Chapter 6 - the midnight visitor

Dominic did not flinch. He slowly closed the laptop screen, standing up from his leather chair. Standing over six feet tall, his shadow stretched across the warm wooden floorboards, but his eyes held no malice—only a profound, quiet weight.
"I didn't lie to you, Emma," Dominic said softly. "I simplified a very complicated truth to keep you from carrying a burden that wasn't yours."
"A burden?" Emma shouted, her voice echoing off the high glass ceilings. "My husband died three years ago! I spent three years believing he was a simple paramedic who had an tragic accident on the highway! And now I find out he was signing multi-million-dollar agreements with the most feared syndicate in New York?"
"He signed that agreement to save your life!" Dominic roared softly, stepping into her personal space, his dark eyes blazing with fierce emotion.
Emma stopped, her breath catching in her throat.
"Four years ago," Dominic continued, his voice dropping back into a low, intense rumble, "Daniel was compromised by his own agency handlers. They found out he had a pregnant wife at home. They threatened to leak your address to the Chicago crews unless Daniel placed three million dollars of my family's funds into their offshore accounts."
Tears streamed down Emma’s cheeks as she stared at the rugged man before her.
"Daniel came to me in secret," Dominic explained, reaching out to gently touch the side of her arm. "He confessed everything. He offered to give me his life if I protected you. Instead of killing him... I signed that blue agreement. I transferred the funds through my own legal firms, making it look like Daniel was my employee, giving him full immunity under my corporate banner."
Emma covered her face with her hands, heavy sobs shaking her shoulders. Everything she had believed about her quiet, simple life was unraveling, revealing that her safety had been bought with immense sacrifices she had never known about.
Before Dominic could comfort her further, a quiet chime echoed through the penthouse security panel.
Marcus stepped into the room, his face dark and serious. "Boss. We have an unauthorized vehicle entering the private garage downstairs. It's marked with federal plates."
Dominic’s expression hardened instantly into pure steel. He reached into his desk drawer, pulling out a sleek black sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced, terrifying efficiency.
"Take Emma and Lily into the safe room behind the study," Dominic ordered Marcus flatly.
"Dominic, no!" Emma cried, grabbing his sleeve. "Don't do this!"

Dominic looked down at her small hand clutching his arm. He reached up, covering her hand with his broad palm, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute devotion.
"No one enters this sanctuary, Emma," Dominic promised softly. "Not tonight. Not ever."
