Chapter 7 - the lavender ribbon

The confrontation downstairs was handled without a single shot fired. Dominic’s legal team and private security force met the rogue federal agents in the garage, presenting state court injunctions and corporate security warrants that forced the vehicles to turn around and leave the property before they even reached the elevators.
By two in the morning, the penthouse had returned to its quiet, luxurious stillness.
Inside the sprawling living room, the glass fireplace crackled softly, casting warm orange light across the velvet furniture.
Dominic sat on the edge of the plush rug near the fireplace. His suit jacket and tie were gone, his black dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar and his sleeves rolled up to his tattooed forearms.
Beside him sat five-year-old Lily. The little girl was completely unbothered by the late hour, happily sitting on the floor as she attempted to tie a new lavender ribbon around Mr. Buttons' worn cloth ears.
"No, Mr. Dominic, like this," Lily instructed bossily, holding up her small fingers. "You have to loop it twice or the bunny's ears flop down."
Dominic, a man whose name made hardened criminals tremble across three states, sat with incredible patience, his massive, tattooed fingers carefully looping the soft lavender ribbon into a neat bow around the stuffed rabbit's ear.
"Like this?" Dominic asked gently, holding up the rabbit for her inspection.
Lily clapped her small hands in pure delight. "Perfect! You're really good at bunny ribbons!"
From the archway of the hallway, Emma stood quietly, watching the scene unfold. Her heart swelled with an unexpected, deep warmth that made her throat feel tight.
For three years, Emma had carried the sole burden of being both mother and father to Lily, protecting her from every shadow of the world. Watching this powerful, dangerous man treat her daughter with such soft, genuine tenderness melted the last defenses around Emma’s heart.
Emma walked softly into the room, sitting down on the rug beside Dominic.
Lily yawned broadly, her little head dropping against Dominic’s broad, solid shoulder. Within two minutes, the exhausted child was fast asleep, her tiny hand resting over his black sleeve.
Dominic didn't move an inch, remaining perfectly still so as not to disturb the sleeping girl.
"She trusts you," Emma whispered softly, looking at Dominic’s sharp, handsome profile in the firelight.
"Children know who is real and who is fake, Emma," Dominic replied low, his dark eyes meeting hers with intense warmth. "She knows I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt her."
Emma reached out, her small fingers gently resting over Dominic’s hand where it supported Lily. Their skin brushed, sending a warm, electric spark straight through Emma’s chest.

"Thank you, Dominic," Emma whispered, her brown eyes shining in the golden light. "For everything."
Dominic looked down at their joined hands, then up at her fair, radiant face. "You don't ever have to thank me, Emma. Protecting you... it’s the only thing in my life that has felt entirely right."
