Chapter 4 - confrontation at midnight

"Down!" Dominic roared.
In a fraction of a second, Dominic lunged across the small room, his massive frame slamming into Claire, throwing her to the floorboards as a second rifle round whistled through the shattered window frame, obliterating the porcelain lamp on the side table.
Vincent reacted with trained precision, drawing his sidearm, grabbing little Lily from the sofa, and pulling her down behind the heavy overturned wooden dining table.
"Marco! Sniper on the roof across the street!" Vincent barked into his collar microphone. "Deploy squad two to the alley!"
Dominic covered Claire with his broad body, his heavy black wool overcoat shielding her from falling glass. He reached into his shoulder holster, drawing his custom black sidearm.
Outside, the screech of heavy tires and the distant chatter of automatic gunfire echoed across the snowy street as Vescari’s outer security detail engaged the attacker. Within ninety seconds, the gunfire stopped.
Vincent’s radio crackled with static: "Boss, shooter fled south via the elevated train tracks. Abandoned the rifle on the fire escape."
Dominic stood up slowly, pulling Claire to her feet. Lily ran into her mother's arms, sobbing loudly, clutching her brown stuffed rabbit against her small chest.
"We are leaving," Dominic commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Now."
Ten minutes later, two black armored SUVs sped down Michigan Avenue, cutting through the midnight fog toward Dominic's heavily fortified penthouse suite on the Gold Coast.
Inside the rear cabin of the lead SUV, Claire sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a sleeping Lily in her lap. Dominic sat across from her, his broad face illuminated by the passing streetlights.
"Claire," Dominic said softly. "The truth. Now. Why was my brother hiding you?"
Claire wiped a tear from her cheek, her delicate face filled with exhaustion. "Marco came to my father's estate the night of the fire. He told me that your security team was burning the compound on your orders. He dragged me out through the servant tunnels."
"I never gave that order, Claire," Dominic said firmly. "I was in New York attending a Commission meeting the night your family's compound burned. Vincent handled the Chicago operations that night."
Claire looked up, her blue eyes searching his face. "Marco gave me that trust fund document three days before he died in the car crash. He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I was never to trust anyone carrying the Vescari crest—especially Vincent."
Dominic turned his eyes toward the front passenger seat, where Vincent sat silently watching the dark highway ahead.
"Vincent," Dominic said, his deep voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Who gave the order to burn the Bellini compound seven years ago?"
Vincent didn't turn around. His dark-gray hair caught the amber glow of the dashboard lights.
"Your father gave that order thirty years ago, Don Dominic," Vincent said quietly. "It was a delayed execution protocol built into the syndicate charter. If the Bellinis ever attempted to sell the Chicago docks to an outside party, their contract was terminated automatically."
Dominic’s jaw tightened. "My father died fifteen years ago, Vincent."
"A Don's charter doesn't die when he enters the ground, Dominic," Vincent replied softly.
The armored SUV pulled into the subterranean garage of Dominic's Gold Coast tower. Dominic stepped out, holding Lily in his arms while Claire walked close beside him under the guard of four heavily armed operatives.
As they entered the private elevator, Dominic’s satellite phone chimed in his pocket. He pulled it out and opened a high-resolution photograph sent by his forensics team from the sniper's abandoned rifle on the rooftop.
Dominic examined the image of the spent brass casing recovered from the fire escape.

Stamped onto the base of the custom bullet was a stylized lion crest—the exact crest engraved on the silver ring resting on Dominic's own finger.
The sniper who had just tried to murder Claire and Lily was using Vescari family ammunition.
