Chapter 6 - deeper roots

Dominic sat in absolute silence as the true scope of the conspiracy began to unfold in his mind.
Vincent Cole—the man who had served as Dominic's right hand for twenty years, the man who had helped him rise from the freezing poverty of his youth—had been playing a multi-year chess game to steal the fifty-million-dollar Chicago docks out from under both the Vescari and Bellini empires.
Dominic stood up and walked silently down the carpeted hallway into the guest suite.
The room was warm and quiet. Lily lay fast asleep under a heavy duvet, her light-brown hair spread across the pillow, holding her brown stuffed rabbit tightly. On the nightstand beside her bed sat the drawing she had promised him—a crude red crayon sketch of a tall man in a black coat holding a little girl's hand in the snow.
Claire sat in a plush armchair near the bed, awake, staring out the window. She looked up as Dominic entered.
"She hasn't slept this peacefully in three years," Claire whispered, her voice filled with quiet gratitude.
Dominic walked over and pulled two silver objects from his pocket.
One was the antique silver ring stamped with the lion crest that sat on his own finger. The second was an identical silver ring he had recovered from his father's safe ten years ago.
He laid both rings on the small table beside Claire's chair.
Claire’s eyes widened as she looked at the two rings sitting side by side. "The blood charter rings..."
"Ten years ago," Dominic said softly, "my father and your father signed the Chicago Agreement. These two rings were crafted to seal the union between our families. My father wore one; your father wore the other."
"My father lost his ring the night before the fire," Claire revealed, her voice barely above a whisper. "He told me someone stole it from his study."
Dominic picked up the second ring, holding it under the lamp light. On the inner band of the silver ring, a small inscription was visible: V.C. — 1996.
Claire gasped, covering her mouth. "Vincent..."
"Vincent didn't just steal the ring ten years ago, Claire," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Vincent was my father's biological half-brother. He was born out of wedlock in the same poverty-stricken neighborhood where I grew up."
Claire stared at Dominic in utter shock. "Vincent is your uncle?"
"My father denied Vincent his name thirty years ago," Dominic revealed, his grey-blue eyes burning with dark realization. "He kept him as a chief security guard, giving him power, but denying him a seat at the syndicate table. Vincent wasn't just trying to steal the docks—he's been executing a thirty-year revenge plan against my father's bloodline."
A sudden soft chime sounded from Dominic's phone.
He pulled it out and read an automated alert from his estate's subterranean archive vault: VAULT DOOR 4 UNLOCKED VIA MASTER BIOMETRIC CODE.

Dominic’s jaw set into stone.
Someone was currently inside the Vescari master vault beneath the estate, accessing his father's original historical ledgers.
