Chapter 8 - the hidden connection

Vincent lunged toward the heavy steel door, slamming his fists against the reinforced iron. "Julian! You bastard! Open this door!"

"Save your breath, Vincent," Julian’s smooth, arrogant voice came through the intercom. "The ventilation system in Vault 4 is set to recycle oxygen for exactly twenty minutes. By the time my men load Claire and little Lily into the boat at the river gate, you'll both be fast asleep."

Dominic didn't panic. He stood tall in the center of the vault, his grey-blue eyes scanning the emergency override panels along the stone wall.

"Julian," Dominic said, his deep voice calm and commanding. "You sold your own family out seven years ago."

"My father was weak, Dominic!" Julian sneered over the speaker. "He was going to split the Chicago docks with your father! I made a deal with Vincent seven years ago to burn the compound so I could take the European shipping contracts! But Vincent got greedy and kept my sister alive!"

Dominic looked at Vincent, who was leaning against the steel door, breathing heavily, realization dawning on his face.

The hidden connection between the three families was finally exposed:

Seven years ago, Julian Bellini and Vincent Cole had formed a secret pact to destroy the Bellini family elder leadership. Vincent wanted the Chicago docks, while Julian wanted the European shipping routes. But when Marco Vescari rescued Claire from the flames, the plan fractured. Vincent kept Claire alive to use Lily's sixth-birthday trust clause, while Julian fled to Europe to operate from the shadows!

"Julian," Dominic said into the speaker console. "You think you can take my niece out of this city?"

"She isn't your niece, Dominic!" Julian laughed wickedly over the intercom. "Check the second page of that medical file on the table! Look at the mother's signature from seven years ago!"

Dominic reached down, flipping the page of the medical file under the desk lamp.

His eyes scanned the original hospital intake form dated seven years ago—the night Claire gave birth in secret.

The intake form listed the biological mother as Claire Bellini. But the listed biological father was handwritten in bold black ink: DOMINIC VESCARI.

Dominic’s breath stopped dead in his throat. His chest felt hollowed out as the world tilted beneath his polished shoes.

Seven years ago, before the fire, before the war, before Claire disappeared—Dominic and Claire had shared a brief, passionate secret romance in New York that neither family had ever been allowed to know.

Lily was not his brother's daughter. She was not Marco's child.

Lily was Dominic’s biological daughter.

The four dollar bills, the red mittens, the hunger, the stubborn refusal to take charity—everything made terrifying, glorious sense. She was his own flesh and blood.

Dominic turned his eyes toward Vincent, his face transforming into a mask of pure, apocalyptic fury.

"You knew," Dominic whispered, his voice dropping to a register that made the concrete floor seem to vibrate. "You knew she was my daughter."

Vincent backed away against the steel wall, his hands raised in genuine terror. "Dominic... I swear... I thought she was Marco's..."

Dominic pulled a small titanium key from his watch strap—a manual override key his father had given him fifteen years ago that bypassed every electronic lock in the tower.

Dominic inserted the key into the mechanical slot beside the iron door and turned it ninety degrees.

The heavy steel vault door swung open with a deafening hydraulic hiss.
