Chapter 2

Before anyone could process the miniature boss's performance, Nora flipped her toy phone shut, shoved it back into her purse, and prepared to resume her march toward the grand dining hall. She took three exaggerated, highly commanding strides across the marble floor, puffing out her small chest with incredible pride.

However, the three-foot length of Adrian’s oversized black silk tie proved to be a tactical hazard.

On her fourth step, the tip of her shoe caught the trailing end of the silk. Nora tripped forward, her tiny arms windmilling through the air as she lost her balance. She tumbled softly onto the marble, her yellow purse spilling onto the floor beside her.

Emma let out a sharp gasp, stepping out from behind the pillar, her hands flying to her mouth. "Nora!"

But before Emma could reach her, the toddler sat up immediately. She didn't cry. She didn't even whimper. Instead, Nora smoothed down her yellow dress, picked up her toy purse, adjusted her yellow hair bow, and straightened her back with an extraordinary display of ridiculous dignity. She looked around the foyer as if to ensure everyone understood that falling had been part of her grand master plan.

A deep, rich sound suddenly echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

It was laughter. Genuine, booming, unfiltered laughter.

The entire room seemed to plunge into absolute zero. The guards turned their heads slowly, their faces turning pale with shock. Adrian Cole stood at the landing of the grand staircase, looking down at the foyer.

He looked imposing as always—wearing an open-collar black dress shirt that revealed dark tattoos along his collarbone, tailored black trousers, polished black leather shoes, and a heavy platinum wristwatch. His thick dark hair was impeccably groomed, and his light stubble framed a sharp jawline. But his face, usually a mask of terrifying control, was transformed by a wide, brilliant smile. He was laughing deeply, a sound none of his men had heard in nearly three years.

"Well," Adrian said, his deep, resonant voice carrying his commanding Connecticut accent down the staircase as he began his descent. "It seems I have competition for the throne."

He reached the marble floor, his polished shoes clicking softly as he walked straight toward the center of the room. The guards instinctively backed up an inch, standing at rigid attention.

Adrian stopped right in front of Nora. The towering Mafia boss, who could bring rival families to their knees with a whisper, slowly crouched down on his haunches. The broad muscles of his shoulders strained against his black shirt as he brought his rugged face level with the tiny girl.

"That was quite an entrance," Adrian said smoothly, his dark eyes sparkling with rare amusement. "And I believe you are wearing my favorite tie."

Nora didn't flinch. She looked directly into the eyes of the most feared man in the state with absolute fearlessness. "I am busy," she informed him sternly. "I have work."

"I can see that," Adrian chuckled, resting his elbow on his knee.

Then, Nora shifted her weight. She lifted her right hand, curled her fingers into a loose fist, and rested her small chin directly upon her knuckle, tilting her head slightly to the left as she studied Adrian’s face.

Across the foyer, Emma stopped dead in her tracks. The rosy color drained entirely from her cheeks, leaving her face as white as the marble beneath her feet. Her breath caught violently in her throat.

That exact stance—resting the chin on a curled fist while tilting the head to the left—did not belong to Adrian. Adrian sat straight, broad, and rigid.

That specific physical habit belonged to James Cole.

James had been Adrian’s younger brother—charming, warm, playful, and far gentler than the ruthless boss. James had died tragically three years ago in a dark, violent incident that Adrian still grieved. It was a gesture unique to James, a micro-mannerism he performed whenever he was listening intently to someone he cared about.

Adrian stayed crouched, his smile fading slightly as his intense eyes locked onto Nora’s posture. A subtle, distant shadow crossed his mind. He looked at the shape of her blue eyes, the curve of her jaw, and the subtle tilt of her head. A strange, inexplicable sense of familiarity washed over him, stirring memories he had buried deep inside his heart.

"Where did you learn to sit like that, little one?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a low, quiet register.

May you like

Nora dropped her hand and blinked innocently. "I just do it."
