Chapter 7

Three days passed in a strange, golden atmosphere inside the Greenwich mansion. For the first time since James’s death, the gloomy, intimidating estate felt alive. Nora’s innocent laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged corridors, her tiny yellow shoes clicking across the marble as she paraded around in her oversized black tie, bringing an uncharacteristic warmth to the hardened men who guarded the property.
Even Adrian found himself changing. He spent his evenings in the east wing conservatory, sitting with Emma and Nora, listening to the toddler’s imaginative stories about her toy purse and her corporate meetings. Between Adrian and Emma, a quiet, unspoken understanding had grown—a deep mutual respect built on their shared love for James and their fiercely protective instinct for Nora.
However, in the world Adrian ruled, vulnerability was a blood trail in shark-infested waters.
It was a rainy Thursday evening. High winds battered the stained-glass windows of the grand foyer, and rain lashed against the high stone walls surrounding the estate. Inside Adrian’s private study, the atmosphere was dark and tense.
Adrian sat behind his mahogany desk, reviewing financial ledgers and weapons shipment manifests. Beside him stood Marcus, holding a dark leather folder.
"Boss," Marcus said softly, his tone heavy with concern. "Our scouts on the New York border caught a scout team two miles out. They were driving unmarked SUVs equipped with long-range surveillance gear."
Adrian didn't look up from his papers, but his sharp jaw tightened. "Moretti?"
"Yes," Marcus confirmed. "Leo Moretti himself was in the lead vehicle. He’s been asking questions around the docks. Someone in the city leaked that a new child was moved into the east wing of your mansion."
Adrian slowly set his pen down. He leaned back in his leather chair, his dark eyes narrowing into twin beams of absolute, cold fury. The dark ink of his chest tattoos peeking above his open collar seemed to darken under the amber desk lamp.
"So Leo thinks he found a leverage point," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register.
"He thinks Nora is your secret daughter, Boss," Marcus explained. "He doesn't know she’s James's child. He thinks she's your illegitimate heir. He’s putting together a hit team to grab her or press you into giving up the Connecticut shipping lanes."
Adrian stood up slowly. His broad, muscular frame cast a towering shadow across the room. He walked over to the window, watching the rain strike the glass.
"Leo Moretti is a fool," Adrian whispered coldly. "He thinks he's targeting a weak spot. He doesn't realize he's walking straight into an execution."
At that moment, the study door creaked open. Nora stepped into the room, wearing her yellow dress, holding her cream stuffed rabbit in one hand and her tiny yellow purse in the other. She looked around the dark room, blinking her bright blue eyes.
"Uncle Adrian?" Nora asked softly. "It’s thunder outside. The sky is loud."
Adrian’s lethal aura vanished in a split second. He turned around, offering her a calm, reassuring smile as he crouched down on the rug.
"Come here, little one," Adrian called gently.
Nora marched over and climbed into his lap, burying her face into his black dress shirt. Adrian wrapped his broad, tattooed arms around her, holding his late brother's child tightly against his chest. He looked over her head at Marcus, his eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying vow.

"Lock down the gates, Marcus," Adrian commanded, his voice barely audible above the thunder outside. "If a single Moretti vehicle crosses the state line tonight, do not capture them. Eliminate them."
