Chapter 6

Word traveled fast within the fortified walls of the Greenwich estate, even if no official announcement had been made. By the next afternoon, the shift in dynamics was impossible to ignore.

Emma and Nora had been moved from the modest staff quarters in the basement to the luxurious guest suite in the mansion’s east wing—a suite reserved exclusively for high-ranking Cole family members. Nora was no longer wearing her pale-pink maid's daughter clothes; she wore an elegant white lace dress, white socks, and yellow shoes, her long blonde curls styled beautifully with her yellow ribbon.

Standing in the main security control room, Marcus—Adrian’s chief lieutenant—stared at the live surveillance monitors with a deep, furrowed brow. Beside him stood three senior bodyguards.

"She’s moving the kid into the east wing?" Marcus muttered, crossing his broad arms over his dark suit. "The housekeeper?"

"Not just moving her," another guard replied softly. "The Boss ordered two permanent posted guards outside her door. He personally brought down James’s old silver lighter from his study and gave it to the kid."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. He was a veteran enforcer who had served the Cole family for a decade. He remembered James Cole vividly, and suddenly, the pieces began to fit together in his mind. The blond hair, the blue eyes, the chin-on-fist stance, the lighter.

"Jesus Christ," Marcus whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "The kid is James’s daughter."

Before Marcus could say another word, the heavy door of the control room swung open. Adrian Cole stepped inside.

The four guards snapped to attention immediately, their posture rigid. Adrian wore a tailored charcoal suit, an open-collar white shirt, his luxury watch gleaming under the fluorescent lights. His dark hair was immaculately styled, his light stubble framed a face of pure, uncompromising authority.

"Marcus," Adrian said, his deep voice cutting through the room.

"Boss," Marcus answered respectfully.

"Effective immediately, Nora Hayes is to be recognized as Nora Cole," Adrian announced, his dark eyes sweeping over the four men with a gaze that left zero room for hesitation. "She is my niece. She is the daughter of James Cole. Any order regarding her safety comes directly from me."

Marcus bowed his head firmly. "Understood, Boss. She will be guarded like royalty."

"She is royalty in this house," Adrian corrected coldly. "And Marcus?"

"Yes, Sir?"

"Double the perimeter patrols on the northern border near the highway," Adrian commanded. "The Moretti family in New York has been pushing boundary lines for two weeks. If they catch wind that James left an heir, they might get creative. I want this estate locked down tighter than a vault."

"Consider it done, Boss," Marcus replied.

Adrian turned and walked out of the control room, his polished leather shoes clicking against the floor. He made his way to the east wing conservatory, a vast glass room filled with tropical plants, marble fountains, and warm sunlight.

Inside, Nora was sitting on a plush velvet rug, playing with her toy phone and her yellow purse. Emma sat nearby on a wicker sofa, reading a book, looking far more rested and beautiful than she had in years.

As Adrian stepped into the conservatory, Nora looked up, her bright blue eyes sparkling. She scrambled to her feet, grabbed her oversized black silk tie—which Adrian had officially gifted to her—and marched across the rug toward him.

"Uncle Adrian!" Nora called out, stopping two feet away and checking her bare wrist. "You are late for the meeting!"

Adrian let out a quiet, genuine laugh, kneeling down in front of her. "Forgive me, little boss. Security took longer than expected."

Nora nodded solemnly, accepting his apology. "Handle it," she instructed.

"I am handling it," Adrian smiled, reaching out to gently squeeze her small hand. But deep down beneath his warm exterior, Adrian knew the calm wouldn't last. The underworld did not respect peace, and a storm was gathering on the horizon.
