Chapter 12 - a seat at the table

By sunrise, the San Francisco fog had cleared, leaving the bay glittering like polished sapphire under a pale blue sky.

The penthouse was immaculate. Marco’s private cleanup crew had worked through the early hours, removing every trace of the night's violence. The bullet holes were patched, the marble scrubbed, and the air purified until only the faint scent of fresh coffee remained.

Lila was sitting at the massive kitchen island, swinging her legs happily. She had a plate of strawberry pancakes in front of her, drizzled with syrup, her pink stuffed rabbit propped up against the juice pitcher.

Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a warm mug of tea. She had washed her face and borrowed a clean gray cashmere sweater from Luca’s wardrobe. It hung loosely on her frame, making her look younger, but the dark circles under her eyes told the story of six years of sleepless nights.

Luca walked into the kitchen wearing a fresh dark-navy suit, crisp white shirt, and no tie. He looked immaculate, powerful, and utterly in command.

Lila beamed when she saw him. "Luca! Look! Rosa made pancakes with faces on them!"

Luca walked over, his expression softening into a genuine, warm smile. He reached out and tapped the tip of her nose. "Did you finish all of them?"

"Almost," Lila giggled. "Rabbit ate the strawberries."

Claire watched the interaction, her chest tightening with an overwhelming mix of relief and sorrow. For six years, she had convinced herself that keeping Lila away from Luca was an act of salvation. But seeing them together, the undeniable connection between them felt like an elemental force that should have never been broken.

Luca turned to Claire. "We need to talk about what happens now."

Claire nodded slowly. She set her mug down on the counter and stepped toward the far side of the kitchen, away from Lila’s hearing.

"Julian is locked up downstairs," Claire whispered. "What are you going to do with him?"

"Julian is a pawn," Luca said plainly. "He will be delivered to a secure facility in upstate New York by tomorrow evening. He will never hold a position in the Moretti family again. But he wasn't the mastermind."

"Then who was?" Claire asked, fear creeping back into her voice. "Luca, if someone powerful enough to hire those men is still out there, Lila and I can't stay here. We can't stay in New York either."

"You are never running again," Luca said, his voice firm, leaving no room for argument. "For six years, you ran because you thought you were alone. You are not alone anymore."

"Luca, your world is dangerous," Claire whispered, gesturing toward the living room where three men had died just hours before. "How can you tell me she's safe here?"

"Because out there, in Ohio, you were hiding in the dark, waiting for a wolf to find you," Luca said, his eyes burning into hers. "In my house, the wolves don't hunt. They guard."

He paused, looking across at Lila, who was carefully wiping syrup off her rabbit's ear with a napkin.

"Tomorrow morning, I am calling a full meeting of the Five Families in Manhattan," Luca said quietly. "I am presenting Lila as my legitimate daughter and sole heir to the Moretti estate."

May you like

Claire gasped. "Luca, no! That puts a target on her back!"

"No, Claire," Luca said, his jaw setting like concrete. "In our world, an illegitimate secret child is a vulnerability to be exploited. An acknowledged heir protected by the full weight of the syndicate is untouchable. Anyone who raises a hand against her declares war on the entire organization."
