Chapter 4 - tarmac and shadows

The wheels hit the tarmac with a muted screech. The cabin lights flickered to full brightness, washing out the shadows.

Lila gathered her stuffed rabbit, humming a nonsense song under her breath, completely oblivious to the silent war being fought over her head.

"Stay seated until the seatbelt sign turns off," Claire said to Lila, but her eyes darted constantly toward the aisle. She reached into her purse, her fingers frantic.

Luca stood up the second the ding sounded. His broad frame completely blocked the aisle, cutting off any line of sight between the two men in row 12 and Claire’s row.

Marco appeared behind Luca like a shadow.

"Boss," Marco said under his breath, his hand resting casually inside his jacket. "The two in twelve. They boarded at JFK three minutes before the doors closed. One-way tickets purchased with cash at the terminal. They haven't looked at their phones once."

Luca didn't turn around. "Whose men are they?"

"Not ours," Marco muttered. "And not the West Coast syndicate. They look like private contractors."

Luca looked down at Claire, who was trying to zip Lila’s pink backpack with trembling hands. "Get up," he said.

"Luca, please," Claire breathed, terror lacing every syllable. "Just let us go through the terminal. If you're seen with us—"

"I said get up," Luca repeated, his tone leaving no room for defiance. He reached down and took Lila’s backpack from Claire’s hands, slinging the tiny pink straps over his broad shoulder without a hint of hesitation.

Then he extended his hand to Lila. "Come on, little one."

Lila didn't hesitate. She placed her small palm in his large, calloused hand and hopped into the aisle. "Are you coming with us, mister?"

"My name is Luca," he said softly, looking down at her. "And yes. I'm coming with you."

They moved toward the exit. As they stepped into the jet bridge, Marco lingered at the cabin door, turning slightly to block the aisle with his broad shoulders, forcing the two men in row 12 to stop behind him.

"Excuse me," one of the men grunted, trying to push past Marco.

Marco didn't budge. He smiled, a cold, empty flash of white teeth. "Patience, friend. We all get to baggage claim eventually."

Luca guided Claire and Lila through the jet bridge and out into the terminal. Claire was practically running, her head down, her fingers gripping Lila’s shoulder.

"Where were you going, Claire?" Luca asked as they moved through the corridor. "Who was meeting you in San Francisco?"

"No one," she lied, her voice cracking. "I have savings. I was going to rent a car and drive north to Mendocino."

"You're lying," Luca said, steering her toward an exit marked *Private Ground Transport* rather than the main terminal escalator.

"I'm not lying!" Claire hissed, stopping in her tracks. "You can't just take control of my life again, Luca! You don't own me. You haven't owned me for six years!"

Luca stopped. He turned slowly, looking down at her. In his tailored clothes, with a little girl’s pink backpack hanging over one shoulder, he looked absurd, but his presence was suffocating.

"I don't care about owning you," Luca said coldly. "I care about the child carrying my blood. And right now, there are two armed men twenty paces behind us who don't care if she makes it out of this airport alive."

Before Claire could respond, Marco caught up to them, his face dark.

"Boss," Marco murmured. "They just made a call. There are two black SUVs idling outside Terminal 2. They aren't ours. We need to move now."
