Chapter 9 - the breach

The lights in the penthouse flickered once, twice, and died.
Emergency backup lighting kicked in instantly, bathing the expansive apartment in a pale, amber glow. The hum of the air conditioning shut down, leaving the high-rise in eerie silence.
Lila gasped and buried her face in Claire’s cardigan. "Mommy, the lights are broken."
"It's just a game, sweetheart," Claire whispered, her voice shaking violently despite her best efforts. "We're going to play hide and seek."
Luca was already moving. He opened a false drawer beneath the mahogany desk, pulling out two heavy black semi-automatic handguns. He chambered a round into both with crisp, metallic clicks, tucking one into his waistband and holding the other at his side.
"Marco," Luca commanded. "How many?"
"At least eight," Marco said, checking the tactical feed on his handheld monitor before the screen scrambled with static. "They're using signal jammers. Tactical gear. Suppressors. Boss, this isn't street muscle. These are corporate mercenaries."
"Julian’s clean-up crew," Luca said coldly. He turned to Claire. "Take Lila into the master suite. Behind the walk-in closet is a reinforced steel door. It has an independent air supply and a separate biometric scanner. Go in, lock it from the inside, and don't open it for anyone except my voice."
"Luca, you can't fight eight men alone!" Claire cried, grabbing his arm. For the first time in six years, her grip was desperate, pleading. "Come with us into the panic room!"
"The panic room seals for seventy-two hours once engaged," Luca said, looking down at her hand on his sleeve. "If we're both in there, Julian takes control of the Moretti board by tomorrow morning on grounds of my disappearance. I stay out here. I end this tonight."
Luca looked down at Lila. The little girl was watching him, her hazel eyes reflecting the amber emergency lights.
"Remember what you said on the plane?" Luca asked her softly.
Lila nodded slowly. "About heavy pockets?"
"No," Luca said, offering a rare, faint smile. "About having no fear. You take care of your mother in that room. Can you do that for me?"
"Yes, sir," Lila whispered bravely, clutching her rabbit.
"Good girl." Luca signaled to Marco. "Get them inside. Now."
Marco escorted Claire and Lila down the corridor. Claire looked back once, her eyes filled with an agonizing mix of terror, guilt, and something old and unbroken between them. Then the master bedroom door closed.
Luca stood alone in the center of the vast, shadowy living room.
Outside, the fog was rolling across the bay, swallowing the Golden Gate Bridge in white mist.
A faint mechanical chime echoed from the private foyer. The elevator doors were opening.

Luca stepped behind a structural pillar of solid gray marble, his gun raised, his breath slow and even. The hunt had come to his house. And whoever had sent these men had forgotten one fundamental truth:
Luca Moretti hadn't inherited the family throne. He had taken it by force.
