Chapter 14 - the return to manhattan

The flight back to New York was entirely different from the one that had carried them west twenty-four hours earlier.
This time, there were no commercial tickets, no crowded aisles, and no shadows lurking in the back rows. Luca’s private Gulfstream cut through the twilight sky, its cabin luxurious, silent, and protected by four armed men hand-picked by Marco.
Lila was fast asleep on the wide leather sofa, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, her rabbit tucked securely beneath her chin.
Claire sat beside Luca at the conference table, looking out at the endless blanket of clouds below. For the first time in six years, the frantic, hunted tension in her shoulders had begun to ease.
"She looks so peaceful," Claire whispered, glancing over at Lila. "She hasn't slept like that since Ohio."
Luca looked at Claire. The soft cabin light illuminated the curves of her face, reminding him painfully of the summer they had spent together before the world tore them apart.
"Why didn't you come to me, Claire?" Luca asked, his voice low, free of anger, filled only with the raw ache of lost years. "Even if you were scared... why didn't you trust that I would protect you?"
Claire looked down at her hands, turning the silver locket over and over in her lap.
"Because the night that man came to my apartment with the Moretti ring..." Claire whispered, her voice catching. "He didn't just threaten me, Luca. He showed me a surveillance photo of you sitting in a restaurant in Little Italy with another woman. A woman with dark hair and a diamond ring on her finger."
Luca stared at her, baffled. "What woman?"
"He told me you had arranged a marriage with the Valenti family," Claire said, tears shining in her eyes. "He told me a bastard child from an art student would ruin the merger, and that you had signed off on cleaning up the mess."
"I never agreed to marry anyone," Luca said, his voice trembling with disbelief and fury. "The Valenti family proposed an alliance six years ago. I rejected it. The meeting in Little Italy was where I told their boss to go to hell."
Claire froze. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with mounting horror. "You... you rejected them?"
"I rejected them because I was in love with you," Luca said, the confession hanging between them like a blade. "I was coming back to that apartment the next morning to ask you to marry me. And when I opened the door, your clothes were gone, the safe was empty, and my life was destroyed."
Claire covered her face with her hands, a broken sob tearing from her throat. Six years of running. Six years of hiding in cheap motels, working double shifts, living in constant terror—all built on a fabricated lie designed to tear them apart.
Luca reached across the table and pulled her hands away from her face, holding them gently in his own.
"It's over, Claire," Luca said softly. "The lies are over. Nobody touches my family again."

The pilot’s voice chimed overhead: *Beginning our descent into JFK. Temperature in New York is forty-eight degrees.*
The plane dipped through the cloud layer, and the sprawling, glittering grid of New York City emerged beneath them—Luca’s kingdom, and the city where every secret began.
