Chapter 5 - the glass cage

Ten minutes later, a heavy armored black sedan tore away from the lower service level of San Francisco International Airport.
Marco drove, his eyes constantly checking the rear-view mirror. Luca sat in the back. Lila was nestled between him and Claire, peering out the tinted window at the glowing skyline of San Francisco climbing into the night fog.
"Look at the bridge!" Lila pointed with her rabbit. "It has lights like a Christmas tree!"
"It's pretty, baby," Claire whispered. She was sitting with her back pressed against the car door, watching Luca as if he were a loaded weapon.
"Where are you taking us?" Claire asked. "I have a bus ticket booked to Santa Rosa."
"You're going to my residence on Nob Hill," Luca said, not looking at her. He was typing rapidly on a secure phone. "It's secure. Reinforced glass, perimeter cameras, private elevator."
"Luca, no," Claire protested, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself and looked at Lila. "If we go there, we're trapped. You don't understand the people who are looking for us. They know your properties."
Luca put his phone down and looked at her. "Nobody breaches my properties and survives to brag about it."
"They don't want to brag, Luca!" Claire said fiercely. "They want her dead! Don't you get it? They don't care about money. They don't care about territory. Lila is a threat to the succession!"
The words hung in the air, heavy and poisonous.
Lila looked up from her window. "What's a succession?"
"Nothing, sweetheart," Luca said, his voice softening instantly as he looked down at the girl. He gently tucked a loose brown curl behind her ear. The movement was so natural, so tender, that Claire visibly flinched.
"Marco," Luca said, his gaze shifting to the rear-view mirror. "Run the plates on the SUVs at the terminal."
"Already did, Boss," Marco replied. "Registered to an LLC out of Delaware. Shell company called Apex Logistics. But here’s the interesting part."
"Speak," Luca ordered.
"The LLC was formed six years ago," Marco said, turning the wheel hard as they climbed the steep incline toward Nob Hill. "And the registered agent on file uses an address in Midtown Manhattan. One block from your corporate headquarters."
Luca went still.
The silence inside the car grew razor-sharp.
"Who knew Claire was pregnant six years ago?" Luca asked, his voice deathly calm.
Claire swallowed hard. "Nobody. I swear to God, Luca. I didn't tell a soul."
"Someone knew," Luca said. "Someone knew, and they set up a company to hunt you down the minute you left."
"I only told one person," Claire whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the tires. "Before I left... I went to the church on 54th Street. I left a letter in the confessional box for your uncle Vincent. He was the only one who treated me like family."
May you like
Luca’s jaw clenched. "Uncle Vincent died three years ago, Claire."
"I know," Claire whispered, her eyes welling with tears. "And three weeks after he died, the first man showed up at our house in Ohio."
