Chapter 2 - the whisper in the hall

The silence inside the study was absolute, broken only by the newly discovered ticking of the desk clock that sounded like thunder inside Vincent's ears.

Vincent didn't make a sound. His broad chest rose and fell in controlled, shallow breaths as his mind processed the chilling whisper from behind the door. Thirty-seven years of forced silence had trained him to be the most observant man in New York, but now, every subtle vibration in the air spoke to him.

He held up a single, sharp finger toward Emily and Lily, signaling them to stay motionless.

Vincent stood up slowly from his leather chair, his polished shoes making zero sound on the heavy Persian rug. He walked with predatory grace toward the heavy oak study door, his dark eyes fixed on the antique brass handle.

He reached out his broad, calloused hand, grabbed the handle, and yanked the heavy door open in a single fluid motion!

Standing in the long marble hallway outside were two men in tailored dark suits. One was Dr. Arthur Vance—the sixty-year-old personal physician who had served the Turner family for three decades—and the other was Marcus Turner, Vincent's forty-five-year-old cousin and chief executive advisor.

Both men froze in utter shock, Marcus holding a encrypted satellite phone halfway to his ear.

Vincent stood in the doorway, his broad frame towering over both men, his charcoal suit pristine, his face an unreadable mask of cold authority. He deliberately kept his lips still, choosing not to reveal that he had heard every single word spoken in the hall.

Marcus forced a smooth, rehearsed smile, adjusting his silk tie. He raised his hands, signing swiftly in formal sign language: Is everything alright, Vincent? The maid's child was seen entering your private study.

Vincent stared at Marcus's hands, then looked into Dr. Vance's pale, sweating face. Instead of speaking aloud, Vincent signed back with sharp, deliberate motions: The child was assisting with paperwork. Why are you lurking outside my door, Marcus?

Dr. Vance swallowed hard, stepping forward with his leather medical bag. He signed: I came for your quarterly neurological examination, Don Vincent. It is time for your ear check.

Vincent's piercing eyes narrowed into razor-sharp points. He looked down at Dr. Vance's trembling hands, realizing with horrifying clarity that for thirty-seven years, this trusted family doctor had been inserting specialized blocking seals into his ears during those "quarterly checks" to keep him perpetually deaf.

Vincent signed back smoothly: Reschedule for tomorrow, Doctor. I am busy with family affairs.

Before Dr. Vance could reply, Vincent stepped back into the study and slammed the heavy oak door shut, turning the brass deadbolt from the inside.

He turned back to face Emily and Lily.

"They put it in my ears when I was a infant," Vincent whispered, his deep, gravelly voice raw with thirty-seven years of suppressed emotion. "My own family kept me deaf."
