Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

Elena stared at the heavy silver pocket watch resting in the palm of her hand. The metal was cold and intricately engraved with a sweeping, aggressive hawk motif. She had never seen it before in her life. James had never mentioned it, and she had packed away all of his belongings herself after the funeral.
Her heart began to race. She tried to pry the watch open, but the clasp was locked tight by a tiny, complex mechanism. It wasn't a standard watch; it was a custom vault piece, the kind made for holding high-value secrets.
A soft knock at her door made her jump. She quickly shoved the pocket watch into the pocket of her pale cardigan and opened the door.
Marco stood in the hallway, looking severe in his fitted black suit. His white shirt collar was crisp against his strong jawline.
Mr. Marquette requests your presence in the main study, Marco said, his American accent flat and professional.
Elena’s stomach plummeted. At this hour? Is something wrong?
Marco’s expression remained unreadable. He doesn't explain himself to me, Mrs. Reyes. Please follow me.
Elena walked through the quiet, softly lit corridors of the mansion. The marble floors reflected the warm glow of the chandeliers. She was led into Vincent’s private study, a massive room lined with dark wood bookshelves, smelling of expensive leather and rain.
Vincent was standing by the fireplace, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He looked incredibly masculine and dangerous in the dim lighting, his intense gray eyes fixing on her the moment she entered. Another man was in the room, standing by a mahogany desk.
The second man was Adrian, Vincent’s most trusted investigator and technology expert. Adrian was in his late thirties, possessing sharp, handsome features, fair skin, and wearing a relaxed navy button-down shirt.
Thank you, Marco. Leave us, Vincent commanded quietly.
Marco nodded and closed the heavy double doors, leaving Elena alone with the two powerful men.
Vincent gestured to a plush leather chair. Sit down, Elena.
Elena sat, her hands clutching the edges of her cardigan, terrified they had found out she was investigating the rabbit. But Vincent’s gaze was not angry; it was heavy with a sorrowful, cautious hesitation.
Adrian stepped forward, holding a sleek tablet. Mrs. Reyes, Adrian began, his voice polite but firm. Mr. Marquette asked me to secure your background files when you were hired, standard procedure for anyone living in this house. But when I looked into your late husband, James Reyes, the records hit a federal firewall.
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. What do you mean? James was an accountant. He died on a rainy highway four years ago.
Vincent set his glass down on the mantelpiece. He walked over, his tall, muscular frame casting a long shadow, and knelt in front of her chair, much like he had done for Lily.
Elena, Vincent said gently, his gray eyes searching her face. Your husband wasn't an accountant. The company he worked for was a front for the Rossi syndicate, a rival organization operating out of Chicago.
Elena shook her head frantically, her long chestnut hair falling over her shoulders. No. No, you’re wrong. James was a good man. He worked long hours, he—
He was laundering millions, Adrian interrupted quietly. And right before he died, three million dollars went missing from the Rossi accounts. The cartel believes he stole it.
Elena felt the blood drain from her face. Her fair, rosy skin turned completely pale. She couldn't breathe. If the Rossi syndicate thought James stole from them, they would come after her. They would come after Lily.
We didn't bring you here to accuse you, Vincent said, his deep voice wrapping around her like a protective shield. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently resting over her trembling fingers. I brought you here to tell you that as long as you are under my roof, no one from Chicago will ever touch you.
Elena looked down at his large, tattooed hand covering hers. The warmth of his touch sent a startling jolt of electricity through her panic. She looked into his eyes and saw absolute, unyielding protection.
I found something, Elena whispered, her voice breaking. In Lily’s toy.
She reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out the tarnished silver pocket watch. She handed it to Vincent.
Vincent’s breath hitched the moment he saw the engraving of the hawk. He stood up slowly, his intense gray eyes widening in shock. He handed the watch to Adrian.
Adrian, open the hidden back, Vincent commanded, his voice suddenly thick with emotion.
Adrian pulled a small specialized tool from his pocket. He pressed a hidden latch on the side of the watch. The silver back popped open with a soft click.
Inside the watch was a tiny, perfectly preserved photograph of James Reyes. He was smiling, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pink hospital blanket.

Adrian froze, his eyes scanning the back of the photograph where a date was stamped in black ink.
