Chapter 9 - The Gathering Storm

Vincent crushed the burner phone in his large, powerful hand, the plastic cracking and splintering into pieces. He tossed the broken device into the roaring fireplace of his study, watching the flames consume the evidence. The terrifying, ruthless mafia boss had returned in an instant, his mind calculating every possible angle of the threat.

James had talked to the FBI. That meant the federal government had an active informant who knew the inner workings of the Rossi syndicate, and by extension, the financial ties that connected the major families, including the Marquettes.

The heavy doors to the study opened. Adrian stepped inside, looking sharp in his tuxedo, though his expression was grim.

Marco told me, Adrian said quietly, closing the doors. We intercepted the encrypted chatter. James flipped. The feds have him in a safe house somewhere on the East Coast.

Vincent leaned against his mahogany desk, his arms crossed over his muscular chest. He’s an idiot. If the Rossis find out he’s in federal custody, they’ll tear the safe house apart to silence him. And if the feds start digging into my accounts to corroborate his story, it threatens everything I’ve built here.

We can silence him first, Adrian suggested, his voice flat and professional. We have the reach.

No, Vincent commanded immediately. Elena thinks he’s gone forever. I will not have her daughter’s biological father assassinated. The blowback would be too risky. We don't kill him. We burn his credibility.

Adrian nodded, pulling out his tablet. How do you want to play it?

Vincent’s gray eyes narrowed, calculating the destruction of a man without spilling a single drop of blood. James is a coward and a thief. The feds only trust him because they think he’s a victim of the syndicate. We are going to expose exactly who he is. Dig up every offshore account he tried to hide the Rossi money in. Fabricate a paper trail that shows he was planning to betray the FBI and sell their safe house locations back to the cartels. Make him look like a double agent. When the feds see the evidence, they’ll drop him as an informant and throw him into a deep, dark federal prison for lying to them.

It’s brilliant, Adrian smiled slightly. It neutralizes the threat, keeps our hands clean, and James spends the rest of his life in a cage of his own making. I’ll start the digital scrub tonight.

Leave it for tomorrow, Vincent said, his harsh expression softening as he looked toward the doors. Tonight is my wedding night. Nothing disrupts that.

Vincent left the study and walked upstairs to the master suite. The cinematic, warm lighting of the room cast a beautiful glow over the massive space. Elena was standing by the balcony, already changed into a delicate white silk nightgown. She looked breathtaking, her fair skin glowing in the moonlight.

She turned as he entered, walking into his open arms. You took a long time, Mr. Marquette, she murmured, resting her hands on his chest.

I was just securing our future, Mrs. Marquette, Vincent replied smoothly, pulling her flush against him. He kissed her deeply, pushing all thoughts of the syndicate, James, and the FBI entirely out of his mind. He worshipped his new wife with a fierce, possessive love, ensuring she knew that she was the center of his universe.

The next few weeks were a masterpiece of mafia strategy. Adrian executed the digital frame-up flawlessly. Within a month, Vincent’s contacts in the federal government reported that James Reyes had been arrested by his own handlers for attempting to sell federal secrets. The Rossi investigation collapsed due to lack of credible witnesses, and James was locked away in a high-security facility, entirely neutralized without a single shot fired.

Vincent kept the details from Elena, wanting her life to remain a sanctuary of peace and bright, happy days.

Lily thrived in the estate. Her medical treatments were working beautifully, her cheeks permanently flushed with a healthy, rosy color. She ruled the mansion with her fearless, stubborn personality. Even the most hardened bodyguards submitted to her demands for imaginary tea parties, knowing that displeasing the tiny boss was far more dangerous than displeasing Vincent.

One afternoon, Vincent was sitting on the pristine white couch in the living room, reading a financial report. He wore his usual white dress shirt and dark trousers, but his polished black shoes were placed respectfully on the marble floor, far away from the white fabric.

Lily marched into the room, holding her worn stuffed rabbit in its tiny tuxedo. She stopped in front of Vincent, inspecting his feet.

Vincent lowered his report, raising an eyebrow at the four-year-old.

May you like

Good job, Lily nodded seriously, approving of his shoe placement. She climbed onto the couch, curling up against his side, resting her head on his muscular arm.

Vincent smiled, kissing the top of her curly light-brown hair. He wrapped his arm around her, feeling a profound, overwhelming sense of peace. He had protected his family. The fortress was secure.
