Chapter 8 - The Velvet Wedding

Six months later, the Marquette estate was transformed into a cinematic dream of white roses and golden sunlight. The sprawling gardens were filled with elegant chairs, crystal archways, and the soft, beautiful music of a string quartet. It was a day of absolute perfection.
Elena stood in the grand master suite, looking at herself in the full-length mirror. She wore a breathtaking, modest white lace wedding gown that hugged her slim build perfectly, trailing into a long, elegant train. Her long wavy chestnut-brown hair was pinned up intricately, interwoven with small white flowers. Her fair rosy skin glowed with pure, unadulterated happiness.
Mrs. Doyle stood behind her, adjusting the veil, tears shining in the older woman’s eyes. You look like an angel, my dear, Mrs. Doyle whispered, her formal composure breaking into a warm, maternal smile.
Thank you, Mrs. Doyle, Elena replied, placing a soft hand over the older woman’s. For everything.
The heavy doors to the suite swung open, and Lily ran into the room. The four-year-old was a vision, wearing a miniature version of Elena’s white lace dress, complete with a massive white silk bow in her curly hair. She carried a small basket of rose petals, but tucked safely under her arm was her worn stuffed rabbit, now wearing a tiny, custom-made tuxedo that Vincent had ordered for it.
Mommy! You look like a princess! Lily beamed, running over and hugging Elena’s legs.
And you look like a queen, Elena smiled, kneeling carefully to kiss her daughter’s cheek. Are you ready to walk down the aisle?
Lily nodded seriously. I have to make sure he doesn't wear his shoes on the white carpet.
Elena laughed, a bright, beautiful sound that filled the room.
Down in the gardens, Vincent stood at the altar. He looked devastatingly handsome, an imposing, powerful figure in a custom-tailored black tuxedo, a crisp white shirt, and a black bowtie. The dark tattoos on his chest and arms were hidden, presenting a picture of absolute, terrifying elegance. Marco and Adrian stood beside him as his groomsmen, looking sharp and severe, though both wore genuine smiles today.
The music swelled. The heavy garden doors opened.
Lily walked down the aisle first, tossing white rose petals with intense, stubborn concentration, ensuring each one landed perfectly on the runner. The guests—trusted syndicate allies and legitimate business partners—watched the fearless little girl with awe.
Then, Elena appeared.
Vincent’s breath completely left his lungs. As he watched the woman who had saved his soul walk toward him, the terrifying mafia boss felt tears prick the corners of his intense gray eyes. He didn't care who saw them. He loved her with a fierce, violent devotion that eclipsed everything else in his life.
Elena reached the altar, looking up into his eyes. Vincent took her hands, his large, warm fingers wrapping gently around hers.
You are my life, Vincent whispered softly, loud enough only for her to hear.
And you are my safe place, Elena whispered back, her blue eyes shining with absolute love.
The ceremony was short, powerful, and deeply emotional. When they finally exchanged rings and the priest pronounced them husband and wife, Vincent pulled her in for a slow, passionate kiss that made the entire garden erupt into cheers and applause.
At the reception, the atmosphere was joyous and bright. Vincent held Lily in his arms as they danced on the marble patio, the little girl resting her head against his shoulder, entirely secure in her father's love. Elena watched them, a glass of champagne in her hand, feeling completely at peace.
But as the night wore on and the guests began to leave, Marco approached Vincent, his face returning to its severe, professional mask. He leaned in, whispering discreetly into Vincent’s ear.
Vincent’s sharp features tightened for a fraction of a second, but he nodded slowly, dismissing the bodyguard with a wave of his hand. He walked over to Elena, wrapping his arm around her waist.
Is everything alright? Elena asked, noticing the microscopic shift in his demeanor.
Everything is perfect, Vincent smiled, kissing her forehead. Just a minor business matter. I’ll be right back.
Vincent walked into his dark, quiet study, closing the heavy doors behind him. He walked over to his mahogany desk and picked up a small, secure burner phone that was vibrating violently.
He answered it, holding it to his ear.
Hello, Vincent, a distorted, mechanical voice spoke from the other end of the line.
Who is this? Vincent asked, his voice low and lethally calm.
May you like
Just a friend, the voice replied. A friend who thought you should know that James Reyes didn't stay in South America. He made a deal with the feds before he got on that boat. He gave them everything on the Rossi syndicate. And now, they’re looking into you. Enjoy the honeymoon, Marquette.
The line went dead.
