Chapter 5 - The Shadow at the Gates

Elena felt the marble floor drop beneath her feet. James. Her dead husband was standing at the gates of the estate.
Grab Lily, Marco ordered, his voice clipped and professional. Take her to the secure bunker beneath the library. Do not come out until I give the all-clear.
Elena didn't hesitate. She scooped Lily up into her arms, the four-year-old protesting as she dropped her toast. Elena ran, her flats slipping slightly on the polished floors, following Mrs. Doyle down the hidden corridors of the mansion.
Outside, the cinematic brightness of the morning felt surreal against the terrifying tension. The massive wrought-iron gates of the Marquette estate were locked tight. On the other side stood James Reyes. He looked older, wearing a cheap suit, his face unshaven and desperate.
Vincent walked out the front doors of the mansion, flanked by Adrian and half a dozen heavily armed bodyguards. Vincent wore no jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal his dark tattoos, projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying lethality. He moved with the slow, deliberate grace of an apex predator.
He stopped a few feet from the gates, staring at the man who had broken Elena’s heart.
Let me in, Marquette! James yelled, gripping the iron bars. I know she’s in there! I need my wife!
Vincent didn't raise his voice. His deep, quiet tone cut through the morning air like a blade. You don't have a wife, James. You have a widow. You died four years ago.
James sneered, his eyes wild with panic. The Rossis found me, man! They know I took the money. If I don't give them Elena and the kid as collateral, they’re going to kill me! Open the gate!
Vincent’s gray eyes turned instantly to ice. The sheer disgust he felt for the man standing before him was absolute. James was willing to trade his own daughter’s life to save his own skin.
Vincent stepped closer to the bars. His towering, muscular frame completely dwarfed James.
You came to the wrong house, Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with a dark, promised violence.
Before James could argue, the sound of heavy engines roared down the private road. Three black SUVs slammed to a halt behind James, trapping him against the gates. A dozen men in dark suits stepped out, holding suppressed weapons. The Rossi syndicate had tracked him.
The leader of the Rossi men, a scarred, fair-skinned enforcer, stepped forward. He looked past James, directly at Vincent.
Mr. Marquette, the enforcer said respectfully, lowering his weapon slightly. This man stole from our boss. We just want to take out the trash. We have no quarrel with your family.
Vincent stared at the enforcer. He knew that if he handed James over, the problem would be solved. James would die, and Elena would be permanently free.
But Vincent was not a man who let others do his killing on his doorstep. And he knew Elena’s heart. If James died brutally today, Lily would eventually learn that her father had been slaughtered while begging for help. Vincent would not let that darkness touch the little girl in the burgundy dress.
Stand down, Vincent commanded the Rossi enforcer. His debt is no longer yours.
The enforcer frowned. With all due respect, Mr. Marquette, he owes us three million dollars. You can't just claim him.
Vincent didn't blink. Adrian, wire five million to the Rossi accounts right now. The extra two is a courtesy for your boss's inconvenience. Tell him James Reyes belongs to me now.
The enforcer hesitated, his earpiece buzzing as Adrian executed the transfer in seconds. The enforcer nodded, stepping back. You bought him, Marquette. He’s your problem now.
The Rossi men piled back into their SUVs and drove away, leaving James standing alone, shivering in terror, staring up at the terrifying mafia boss who had just bought his life.
Open the gates, Vincent ordered softly.
The heavy iron gates swung open. James stumbled forward, falling to his knees on the pristine driveway. Thank you, he sobbed. Thank you, Marquette. I knew Elena would find a way to save me.
Vincent looked down at him with absolute contempt.
May you like
You aren't here for Elena, Vincent said, his voice dropping an octave. Marco, take him to the warehouse.
Two massive bodyguards grabbed James by his arms, dragging him away as he screamed for his wife. Vincent turned around and walked back into the bright, silent mansion, his mind already turning to the woman waiting for him in the dark.
