Chapter 6 - The Velvet Fortress

The underground bunker beneath the library was a lavishly decorated panic room, lined with plush velvet couches and soft lighting. Elena sat on the floor, holding Lily tightly in her arms. The little girl was confused but not crying, her small hands playing with the collar of Elena’s cream blouse.
The heavy steel door hissed open. Vincent stepped inside.
He looked massive and intimidating, but the moment he saw them huddled on the floor, his entire demeanor softened. He walked over and knelt beside them on the expensive rug.
It’s over, Vincent said gently, his intense gray eyes locking onto Elena’s. You are safe.
Is he... Elena hesitated, her voice trembling. Is James dead?
No, Vincent replied. I bought his debt from the Rossis. He is alive, and he will be dealt with. But he will never come near you or Lily again.
Elena let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for four years. The relief was so profound it made her dizzy. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against Vincent’s broad chest, closing her eyes. Vincent wrapped his strong arms around her and Lily, holding them together, a powerful, immovable guardian.
Lily looked up at Vincent, her expressive blue eyes entirely serious.
Did you wear your shoes on the carpet? Lily demanded, breaking the heavy emotional tension in the room.
Vincent let out a sudden, genuine, deep laugh. It was a beautiful sound, one that echoed off the bunker walls and made Elena’s heart skip a beat. No, ma’am, Vincent smiled, looking down at the child. I took them off at the door.
Over the next few weeks, the Marquette estate became a true fortress, but inside, it felt like a home. Elena was no longer treated as a housekeeper. She was a guest of honor. Her neutral skirts and cardigans were replaced by beautiful, elegant dresses provided by Vincent, though she always chose modest, soft colors that complemented her chestnut hair and fair rosy skin.
Vincent spent every spare moment with them. He taught Lily how to play chess in the grand study, allowing the four-year-old to make up entirely ridiculous rules that he followed without question. The bodyguards, Marco and Adrian, grew accustomed to seeing their terrifying boss attending imaginary tea parties or reading storybooks on the white marble floors.
But the romantic tension between Vincent and Elena was a slow, burning fire that neither could ignore.
One evening, after putting Lily to sleep in a lavish guest suite, Elena walked out to the balcony. The night air was warm, the stars shining brightly over the estate’s gardens. Vincent was standing by the stone railing, holding a glass of whiskey, looking out into the darkness.
He wore his white dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up, the dark tattoos on his forearms fully visible. He looked back at her as she stepped outside.
You look beautiful, Vincent said, his deep voice carrying on the night breeze.
Elena blushed, stepping closer to him. Her heart hammered in her chest. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, Vincent. You saved our lives.
Vincent set his glass down. He turned to fully face her, closing the distance between them. I didn't just save you, Elena, he murmured, his intense gray eyes dropping to her lips. You saved me. Before you and Lily walked into that kitchen, I was a ghost haunting my own house. You brought me back to life.
Elena looked up into his eyes, seeing the raw, fierce love he held for her. She didn't hesitate. She reached up, her soft hands resting on his sharp jawline, feeling the light stubble against her palms.
Vincent let out a ragged breath and leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate, completely overwhelming kiss. It was a kiss built on years of loneliness, desperate protection, and undeniable desire. He wrapped his muscular arms around her waist, pulling her flush against him, lifting her slightly off the stone floor. Elena kissed him back with everything she had, entirely surrendering to the man who had become her world.
When they finally pulled apart, both breathing heavily, Vincent rested his forehead against hers.
I want you to stay, Vincent whispered fiercely. Not as a guest. Not as a housekeeper. Be my partner, Elena. Build a life with me.
I will, Elena promised, tears of pure joy shining in her eyes. I want that more than anything.
But their perfect moment was interrupted by the sound of clearing a throat.
May you like
They turned to see Mrs. Doyle standing in the doorway of the balcony. The older woman looked impeccably composed in her black dress, but her eyes were heavy with a dark, impending secret.
Mr. Marquette, Mrs. Doyle said quietly, her hands clasped in front of her white apron. I am afraid there is something you must know. About James Reyes. And about me.
