Chapter 1 - The Unseen Haven

The third-floor staff room of the Valenti estate in Lake Forest was small, warm, and smelled faintly of lavender starch. Outside the arched window, the autumn sun cast golden light across the manicured lawns of the thirty-acre property, but inside, twenty-eight-year-old Claire Bennett was focused on a tiny three-year-old girl.

Claire adjusted the yellow lace dress on her daughter, smoothing out the cream tights and tightening the laces of her yellow boots. Sophie Bennett sat quietly on the wooden chair, her large brown eyes watching her mother with complete trust. Her long brown hair was gathered into two slightly messy braids, and cradled tightly against her chest was Mr. Buttons, a worn white stuffed rabbit missing its left button eye.

Claire set down a small paper plate with a half-sliced peanut butter sandwich and a box of eight wax crayons.

"Stay right here in this chair, sweetie," Claire whispered, her voice gentle but firm as she tucked a stray lock of brown hair into her own practical loose bun. "Mommy has to finish wiping down the glass gallery on the second floor. Do not open the door, okay?"

Sophie nodded seriously, hugging Mr. Buttons tighter. "I'm staying right here, Mommy."

Claire gave her daughter a quick kiss on the forehead, picked up her housekeeping tray, and slipped out into the hallway, closing the heavy oak door until the brass latch clicked.

Ten minutes later, down in the grand marble corridor of the ground floor, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Dominic Valenti walked through the vaulted hallway. At forty-one, he was Chicago’s most feared and powerful Mafia Boss, commanding an empire built on absolute discipline and cold authority. He was exceptionally tall, broad-shouldered, and ruggedly handsome, with thick dark wavy hair, a trimmed beard, and intense dark eyes that rarely showed emotion. His forearms, exposed by the rolled-up sleeves of his fitted black dress shirt, were covered in dark ink. A gold luxury wristwatch glinted on his wrist above tailored black trousers and polished black shoes.

Walking half a step behind him was Marco Russo, forty-four, Dominic's head of security. Dressed in a crisp charcoal suit, black shirt, and a discreet earpiece, Marco scanned every doorway with practiced, sharp discipline, accompanied by three suited guards.

Domestic staff members pulled their cleaning carts to the walls, lowering their eyes respectfully as the Boss passed. Dominic didn't look left or right. He moved with a heavy, purposeful stride, his mind focused on an upcoming syndicate meeting.

Then, without warning, Dominic stopped dead in his tracks.

Marco and the guards instantly froze behind him, their hands moving reflexively toward their jackets.

Standing right in the center of the vast marble corridor, fifty feet from the staff wing, was a tiny three-year-old girl. She wore a pale yellow lace dress and bright yellow boots, holding a worn white stuffed rabbit in her arms. She wasn't crying, nor was she afraid. She simply stood there, staring straight up at the towering, muscular crime lord with wide, expressive brown eyes.
