Chapter 6 - The Traitor's Footsteps

Within twenty minutes, the entire security posture of the Valenti estate transformed into an impenetrable fortress.
Marco stood at the central security console in the east wing, reviewing digital background clearance logs. Dominic walked into the room, holding a sleeping Sophie against his shoulder, while Claire walked beside him, wrapped in one of Dominic's warm cashmere coats.
"What did you find, Marco?" Dominic demanded softly, so as not to wake his daughter.
"Claire's employment application was approved three weeks ago through our secondary domestic staffing agency," Marco reported, his voice tight. "The agency's internal clearance code was authorized using Julian Vance's old digital signature—a signature that should have been revoked two years ago when Julian was exiled to Europe."
Claire looked up, panic rising in her chest. "What does that mean, Dominic?"
"It means Julian didn't just hide you four years ago, Claire," Dominic said, his dark eyes narrowing into cold slits. "He kept tabs on you. When he realized my syndicate was consolidating absolute power in Chicago, he placed you inside my house as a bargaining chip."
Before Marco could reply, the estate's internal communications console chimed with a high-priority alert.
A dark sedan had just pulled up outside the outer security gates on Elm Road.
Marco pulled up the gate camera feed on the main monitor. Standing outside the reinforced iron gates in the rain was Julian Vance—sixty-two years old, wearing a dark wool coat, his gray hair and scarred jaw visible under the streetlights. Behind his vehicle were two black SUVs with dark tinted windows.
A sharp electronic chime echoed from the desk speaker as an incoming call connected to the gate intercom.
Julian's raspy, arrogant voice boomed through the speaker: "Hello, Dominic. I see you’ve finally met your daughter."
Dominic walked slowly toward the console, his presence terrifying in its calm, controlled power. He pressed the master microphone button.
"You're standing on the wrong side of my gate, Julian," Dominic said softly into the microphone.
"I have fifty armed men surrounding your estate perimeter, Dominic," Julian sneered over the static. "Hand over the girl and the mother. Give me full operational control of the river shipping docks, and I will let you walk away from Chicago alive."
Dominic looked down at his sleeping daughter resting against his chest, then at Claire, whose dark eyes were filled with absolute trust in him.
May you like
Dominic leaned into the microphone, his voice a low, chilling rumble that made the speakers vibrate:
"You have five minutes to run, Julian. Because after that, I am coming out."
