Chapter 2 - The Echo of Michigan Avenue

The bright fluorescent lights of the hospital lobby felt harsh and blinding compared to the rainy street outside.

Ryan took two steps forward, closing the distance between himself and Grace. His long gray wool coat was wet with rain, but his focus was entirely locked onto the three small children standing quietly beside his ex-wife.

"Grace," Ryan whispered, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, quiet weight. "Why does my grandfather's family crest appear on his hospital bracelet?"

Grace pulled Ethan behind her pink dress, her hands trembling as she clutched her shoulder bag. "Ryan... please. You shouldn't be here. You have a dinner to attend."

Ryan pulled his smartphone from his pocket as it vibrated for the fifth time with an incoming call from Amelia Brooks. Without taking his eyes off Grace, Ryan swiped his thumb across the screen and turned the phone completely off.

"There is nowhere else in this city I should be," Ryan said, kneeling on the cold marble floor to bring his towering frame level with the three children.

He looked directly into Ethan's serious gray-blue eyes. The little boy didn't hide. He stood tall in his dark rain boots, his small hands tucked into his navy coat pockets, staring back at the billionaire with quiet, fearless curiosity.

"What is your name, son?" Ryan asked softly, his voice thick with an emotion he could barely contain.

"Ethan," the little boy answered clearly. He pointed a small finger at the two girls behind Grace. "That's Emma, and that's Ella."

Emma, wearing her soft pink coat, peeked out from behind Grace's leg with gentle brown eyes. Ella, wearing a lavender bow in her wavy brown hair, offered a small, curious wave.

Ryan felt an agonizing tightness in his chest. Three years. Three entire years of missing their first steps, their first words, their first smiles.

He stood up, his gray-blue eyes turning back into cold, hard stone as he looked at Grace. "You ran away three years ago, Grace. You told me you wanted nothing to do with the Whitmore family. And now I find you in a hospital lobby with my triplets?"

Tears welling in her eyes, Grace swallowed hard. "I didn't run away because I hated you, Ryan. I ran away to keep them alive."

Before Ryan could ask what she meant, the sliding glass doors of the lobby opened, and his personal security chief, Marcus, stepped inside, holding a large black umbrella.

"Boss," Marcus said softly, stopping a respectful distance away. "Miss Brooks called the private detail. She is asking why you haven't arrived at the restaurant."

Ryan didn't even turn his head. "Tell Amelia the engagement is off for tonight. Cancel the reservation."

Marcus’s eyebrows shot up in shock, but he immediately adjusted his coat. "Understood, Mr. Whitmore."

"And Marcus," Ryan added, his voice dropping into a lethal, commanding register. "Prepare the private suite at my Gold Coast estate. We are taking my family home."

Grace took a step back, panic flashing across her face. "Ryan, no! We can't go to your estate! Your family's board members—"

"My family's board members don't control my home, Grace," Ryan interrupted, gently taking her arm into his firm, warm grip. "You are coming with me tonight. I am going to find out what happened three years ago, and nobody is leaving my sight until I get the truth."
