Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the East Wing

The Whitmore estate on Chicago's Gold Coast was an imposing monument of limestone, iron gates, and high security walls. Rain trickled down the leaded glass windows as the heavy iron gates closed behind Ryan's black SUV.

Ten minutes later, the private guest wing on the third floor was filled with warm, soft light.

Grace sat on the edge of a velvet sofa, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea that the estate's head housekeeper had brought her. Her cream wool coat was draped over a chair, revealing her simple pale pink dress.

Across the room, the three children were sitting on a plush Persian rug. Ethan was quietly lining up three carved wooden toy cars, while Emma and Ella were coloring in a storybook that the staff had quickly retrieved from the estate nursery.

Ryan stood near the fireplace, his gray wool coat removed, his dark charcoal suit jacket unbuttoned, revealing his broad shoulders and dark tie. He held a crystal tumbler of scotch, untouched, his gray-blue eyes fixed on the three children playing on the floor.

Every time Ethan made a sharp turn with his wooden car, he let out a quiet, serious hum that sounded identically like Ryan’s own habit during corporate strategy sessions.

"They're incredible, Grace," Ryan said softly, his baritone voice filling the quiet room.

Grace looked down at her tea, a sad, exhausted smile touching her lips. "They are the only good thing I have left in this world, Ryan."

Ryan walked across the room, his polished black shoes silent against the thick rug. He sat on the wooden coffee table directly across from Grace, setting his glass aside.

"Explain the envelope, Grace," Ryan commanded gently, pointing to the thick white medical file resting on the side table. "Why did the doctor hand you a file with my family name on it?"

Grace took a slow, shuddering breath, her fingers trembling against the porcelain teacup. "Three years ago, when I discovered I was pregnant with triplets, I went to your father's private legal team to tell them. I thought we could fix our marriage."

Ryan’s jaw clenched tightly, his light stubble shadowing a sudden, dangerous tension. "My father died four years ago, Grace. Who did you speak to?"

"Arthur Vance," Grace whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "Your family's senior board chairman."

Ryan’s eyes narrowed into cold slits. Arthur Vance was the most powerful executive on the Whitmore Enterprises board—a man who had managed the family trust for two decades.

"Vance told me that if I kept the children, your family's board would initiate a forced trust liquidation that would ruin you financially," Grace continued, her voice cracking. "He showed me medical records claiming that my pregnancy was high-risk, and he threatened to use court orders to take the babies away from me the moment they were born."

Ryan felt a surge of pure, murderous rage boil inside his chest. "Vance threatened you?"

"He paid a private clinic to alter my medical files, Ryan," Grace sobbed softly. "He told me you agreed to the settlement. He handed me a signed non-disclosure agreement with your signature on it!"

Ryan stood up so fast his chair scraped against the floor. "I never signed a non-disclosure agreement, Grace! I spent six months searching for you after you left!"

Before Grace could answer, the heavy double doors of the private suite slammed open.

Amelia Brooks stood in the doorway. She looked breathtakingly beautiful in her champagne evening gown, her diamond earrings sparkling under the chandelier light, her eyes burning with pure, furious indignation as she stared at Grace and the three children.
