Chapter 9 - The Return to Gold Coast

Three weeks later, the autumn rain had given way to a crisp, beautiful sunny morning over Lake Michigan.

The Whitmore estate on the Gold Coast was transformed into a warm, vibrant home filled with life and laughter. The heavy iron security gates stood open, letting in the gentle lake breeze.

In the grand back garden, three-year-old Ethan, Emma, and Ella were running happily across the green lawn. Ethan was wearing his navy coat, proudly steering a new red toy pedal car, while Emma and Ella chased after bright yellow butterflies with tiny nets.

Sitting on a plush sofa on the sunlit stone terrace was Grace. She wore a stunning cream silk dress, her brown hair shining under the sun, her pale face rosy and glowing with complete health and happiness.

Walking across the terrace toward her was Ryan. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with rolled sleeves and dark trousers. In his hands, he carried a silver tray with two cups of warm tea and a small, fresh pastry plate.

He set the tray down on the table, sat beside Grace, and gently wrapped his broad arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side.

Grace leaned her head against his broad chest, letting out a deep, contented sigh. "I still can't believe we're here, Ryan. Three weeks ago, I was standing under a wet bus shelter with twenty dollars in my pocket."

Ryan looked down at her, his gray-blue eyes filled with deep, unwavering love. He reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out the small, plush velvet engagement-ring box he had carried on that rainy night on Michigan Avenue.

He popped the box open, revealing the brilliant four-carat diamond glinting under the morning sun.

Grace gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth as tears of joy filled her eyes.

"Three years ago, I let corporate lies tear us apart, Grace," Ryan said, his voice thick with emotion as he slipped down onto one knee before her. "I spent three years living in an empty house, thinking my heart was dead. You brought my children home, and you brought me back to life."

He looked up into her brown eyes with complete devotion. "Grace Bennett, will you marry me again and let me spend the rest of my life being the husband and father you deserve?"

May you like

Grace pulled him up, throwing her arms around his neck and kissing him with three years of stored-up love and passion. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"

From the lawn below, Ethan, Emma, and Ella came running up the terrace steps, cheering happily as they jumped into their parents' arms for a warm, unbroken family embrace.
