Chapter 2

The heavy silence that descended upon the magnificent office was suffocating, broken only by the quiet ticking of the antique grandfather clock standing in the corner. Sunlight continued to pour through the stained glass, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, but the room felt as though the temperature had plummeted toward freezing.

Sophia felt her knees go weak under the piercing, unyielding weight of Alessandro Moretti’s gray eyes. Her fair skin turned deathly pale, making her rosy cheeks stand out in stark contrast. She clutched her modest white apron so tightly that her knuckles turned stark white. Every instinct screamed at her to grab Emma and run, yet her feet felt glued to the dark hardwood floor.

"I... I asked you a question, Sophia," Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, velvet baritone. He did not raise his voice; he did not need to. The raw authority radiating from his broad-shouldered frame was enough to command absolute obedience. His tattooed hand remained wrapped gently yet securely around three-year-old Emma’s tiny fingers.

"Sir... she... she doesn't have a father," Sophia stammered, her voice shaking violently as she struggled to maintain her composure. "It's just me. It's always just been me."

Emma, completely untroubled by the heavy tension suffocating her mother, leaned her small body against the side of Alessandro’s black wheelchair. She picked up the remaining piece of butter cookie from the plate on his lap and nibbled on it happily, her golden-blonde curls bouncing against her pale-yellow ribbons.

Alessandro did not break eye contact with the young maid. His sharp jawline flexed as his mind raced back through the dark, blood-soaked pages of his past. Four years ago, long before the ambush that had put him in a wheelchair, there had been a chaotic, high-stakes night in the North Side of Chicago. A violent clash between the Moretti syndicate and a rival faction had forced him to seek temporary shelter in a quiet, obscure bakery near the harbor. A young, gentle woman with long chestnut-brown hair and terrified brown eyes had hidden him in her back room while rival hitmen searched the streets. That night, bound by shared fear and an undeniable, electric connection, they had shared a quiet, passionate encounter before he disappeared back into the dark underworld to protect her from the fallout.

He had searched for her afterward, but the bakery had been burned to the ground two weeks later by his enemies, and all records had vanished. He had assumed she was gone forever.

Alessandro looked back down at Emma. He studied the gentle arch of her brow, the unique shape of her eyes, and the precise, stubborn set of her chin. They were not just random features; they were the undeniable, living mirror of his own mother’s portrait, which hung in the estate’s grand gallery.

"Her eyes," Alessandro murmured softly, his thumb gently brushing across Emma’s small hand. "And her birthday. When was she born, Sophia?"

Sophia swallowed hard, a tear breaking free from her expressive brown eyes and trailing down her fair cheek. "October... October fourteenth, sir."

The mathematical reality locked into place instantly. Nine months after that fateful, stormy night in the North Side.

Alessandro’s breathing grew heavy. The cold, unfeeling crime lord who had spent years believing he was destined to leave no legacy other than blood and ashes realized that the child standing beside his wheelchair was his own flesh and blood. The daughter he never knew existed was holding his hand, offering him butter cookies, and telling him she would take care of him.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the office swung open completely.

Marco, Alessandro’s chief of security and most trusted lieutenant, stepped into the room. Tall, muscular, and dressed in a tailored suit with a visible shoulder holster, Marco’s stern, battle-hardened face was tight with urgent concern.

"Boss," Marco said, his deep voice cutting through the heavy emotional atmosphere. "We have a situation at the southern gate. Three vehicles belonging to the Vance family just entered our perimeter. Captain Vance is demanding an immediate audience regarding the harbor territories."

Alessandro’s expression hardened instantly, the intense emotional shock transforming into a mask of cold, lethal calculation. He did not let go of Emma’s hand immediately. Instead, he looked at Marco, his gray eyes burning with a dangerous light.

"Who let them through the outer gate without my personal authorization?" Alessandro demanded coldly.

"They claimed they had an appointment with your late brother's estate, sir," Marco replied, his eyes briefly flicking down to Emma in surprise before returning to his boss. "Vance brought eight heavily armed men with him. They're moving toward the main courtyard."

Sophia gasped softly, her maternal instincts screaming at her as the mention of armed men reached her ears. She took two quick steps forward, dropping to her knees beside the wheelchair.

"Please, Mr. Moretti," Sophia pleaded in a trembling whisper, looking up at him with raw desperation. "Let me take Emma away. Please... don't let her be involved in this."

Alessandro looked down at Sophia. For the first time, he saw not just an underpaid maid in a gray uniform, but the woman who had saved his life four years ago and endured four years of poverty to raise his daughter in secret.

"Marco," Alessandro commanded sharply, his voice carrying the full weight of the Moretti empire.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Lock down the interior wing. Station four elite guards at the entrance of my private quarters," Alessandro ordered, his eyes never leaving Sophia's face. "No one enters this floor. No one touches this woman or this child. If a single Vance soldier sets foot on these stairs, put a bullet through his head."

Marco’s eyes widened slightly in realization, but he bowed his head instantly without hesitation. "Understood, sir. It will be done immediately."

Alessandro turned his wheelchair slightly, looking down at three-year-old Emma, who was staring up at him with her bright blue eyes, completely unfazed by the sudden arrival of armed men.

"Sophia," Alessandro said, his tone low, firm, and absolute. "You and Emma are not going anywhere. You are staying right here, under my protection."
