Chapter 3

The grand estate of the Moretti family was built like an impenetrable fortress, nestled on fifty acres of private, wooded land on the outskirts of Chicago. High stone walls, state-of-the-art security cameras, and heavily armed guards patrolled the grounds around the clock. Yet, inside the private residential wing, the air was filled with a different kind of tension—one born of long-buried secrets finally rising to the light.

Sophia stood near the center of Alessandro's private living suite, a luxurious, master-designed room adjacent to his office, adorned with plush velvet sofas, rich oriental rugs, and warm golden wall sconces. She held Emma tightly in her arms, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Emma, however, was happily playing with the golden ribbons of her pale-yellow dress, resting her head against her mother's shoulder.

"Mommy," Emma whispered softly, her little voice full of innocent curiosity. "Why is the nice mister sitting in the rolling chair?"

Sophia squeezed her eyes shut, pressing a gentle kiss against her daughter's golden curls. "He's... he's hurt, sweetie. His legs are tired."

"Can my magic cookies fix his legs?" Emma asked, looking up with bright, hopeful blue eyes.

Sophia choked back a quiet sob, resting her cheek against Emma's head. "I don't think cookies can fix this, my darling. But you were very brave."

The heavy double doors of the suite clicked open, and Alessandro wheeled himself into the room. He had removed his suit jacket, leaving his white dress shirt partially unbuttoned, revealing the intricate black ink covering his muscular chest and neck. His thick black hair remained slicked back, but his gray eyes held a deep, unyielding focus as he looked at the mother and child.

Behind him, Marco closed the doors tightly, remaining outside to guard the perimeter. The confrontation with Captain Vance in the courtyard had been handled swiftly—Alessandro’s loyal forces had disarmed Vance's men and forced them off the property with a clear, lethal warning that the Moretti empire was far from vulnerable.

Alessandro stopped his wheelchair three feet from where Sophia stood. He looked up at her, his rugged, handsome features softened by the quiet privacy of the room.

"Sit down, Sophia," Alessandro instructed gently, gesturing toward the plush velvet sofa. "You're trembling."

Sophia hesitated, then slowly sat down on the edge of the sofa, keeping Emma nestled securely in her lap. She kept her expressive brown eyes lowered, fearful of what this ruthless man would do now that he knew the truth.

"Look at me, Sophia," Alessandro said quietly.

Sophia forced herself to raise her head, meeting his intense gray gaze.

"Why didn't you come to me?" Alessandro asked, his voice laced with a complex mix of sorrow, frustration, and undeniable authority. "Four years ago... after that night. When you realized you were carrying my child, why didn't you find me?"

Sophia took a shuddering breath, her fair skin flushing slightly. "How could I, Mr. Moretti? You are the leader of the largest crime syndicate in the Midwest! Two weeks after you left my bakery, men with guns came and burned it to the ground. They were looking for you! I was terrified. If I had come to your mansion, your enemies would have targeted my baby before she even drew her first breath!"

Alessandro went still, his strong hands tightening on the armrests of his wheelchair until his knuckles turned white. The logic of her words was undeniable, cruel, and painfully accurate. In his world, weakness was exploited mercilessly. Had his rivals known he had a daughter four years ago, Emma would have been a target from the day she was born.

"So you raised her alone," Alessandro murmured, his voice rough. "In poverty."

"I worked three jobs," Sophia whispered, tears glistening in her brown eyes. "I cleaned offices, I worked in kitchens, I did whatever I had to do to buy her food and clothes. When the head housekeeper here posted an opening for a maid last month, I took it because the pay was enough to afford a safe apartment for us. I didn't even know you lived in this wing, sir! I swear I didn't plan for her to wander into your office!"

Alessandro looked from Sophia to Emma, who was now staring at his dark tattoos with fascinated blue eyes. The realization that his own daughter had been living in poverty, eating scraps while he sat on millions of dollars in a fortified mansion, cut through his ruthless heart deeper than any bullet ever had.

He slowly reached out his heavily tattooed hand, stopping inches from Emma’s face. The three-year-old girl smiled brightly, reaching out her tiny fingers without hesitation and wrapping them around his large thumb once more.

"You don't need to work as a maid anymore, Sophia," Alessandro declared, his voice low, firm, and absolute. "Neither of you will ever suffer, starve, or hide again."

May you like

Sophia blinked, her breath catching. "Sir... what are you saying?"

"I am saying," Alessandro replied, his gray eyes blazing with a fierce, protective fire, "that Emma is a Moretti. And as long as I draw breath, she will want for nothing in this world."
