Chapter 9

Two weeks had passed since the failed invasion by the Falcone syndicate. The autumn season in Chicago had reached its peak, painting the estate grounds in brilliant shades of crimson, gold, and deep orange.
The threat from New York had been completely neutralized. Following Lorenzo Falcone's capture, Alessandro had orchestrated a decisive, brilliant counter-strike through his political and underworld alliances, stripping the Falcone syndicate of their shipping territories and forcing Don Carmine Falcone into an absolute, humiliating surrender. Chicago remained undisputed Moretti territory.
On a crisp, sunny afternoon, Alessandro sat in his black wheelchair near the edge of the estate's private lake. He wore a heavy black wool coat over his suit, his thick black hair neatly styled, his piercing gray eyes watching the water reflect the golden sky.
Walking across the manicured lawn toward him was Sophia, wearing an elegant cream-colored coat, her chestnut hair glowing in the sunlight. In her hand, she led three-year-old Emma, who was skipping happily in her pale-yellow floral dress, yellow ribbon, and small white shoes.
Emma broke free from her mother's hand and ran forward, her little white shoes crunching softly on the autumn leaves.
"Daddy! Look!" Emma cheered, holding up a bright red maple leaf she had picked from the grass.
Alessandro smiled warmly as she reached his wheelchair. He reached down with his powerful arms, lifting her effortlessly into his lap. "It's beautiful, sweetheart."
Sophia walked up beside his chair, resting her hand gently on Alessandro’s broad shoulder. He reached up, taking her fingers in his own, pressing a soft kiss against her knuckles.
"Dr. Vance called this morning," Sophia mentioned softly, her rosy cheeks dimpling with a gentle smile. "He reviewed your latest spinal scans from last week."
Alessandro looked up at her, his gray eyes calm. "And what did Julian say?"
"He said that the nerve damage in your lower spine isn't completely permanent," Sophia revealed, her voice trembling with hopeful emotion. "He believes that with intensive physical therapy and proper surgical rehabilitation in Switzerland next month... you might be able to walk again."
Alessandro went quiet, staring out over the glittering lake. For four months, he had accepted his paralysis as a permanent sentence, a physical manifestation of his dark, violent life. But now, looking at his daughter sitting in his lap and the beautiful woman standing by his side, a new, powerful hope ignited deep within his soul.

"Then we will go to Switzerland," Alessandro said softly, his voice full of quiet, unshakeable determination. "I want to be able to dance with my daughter on her wedding day. And I want to walk beside you, Sophia."
Sophia leaned down, resting her forehead against his, her brown eyes filled with tears of pure happiness. "You will, Alessandro. I know you will."
