Chapter 6

The heavy oak double doors leading into the main foyer rattled violently as the firefight outside reached a deafening crescendo. Muzzle flashes illuminated the stained-glass windows of the atrium, casting chaotic, jagged shadows across the marble floors.
Alessandro did not panic. The instinct for survival that had made him the most feared boss in Chicago took over completely.
"Marco!" Alessandro ordered loudly over the roar of gunfire. "Help me into the secondary security bay!"
Beside the atrium stood a hidden reinforced door disguised as a wood-paneled display cabinet. Marco stepped forward instantly, keying in a seven-digit passkey into a hidden keypad. The cabinet swung open, revealing a private, tactical command station equipped with surveillance monitors, controls for the estate's automated defense systems, and a heavy armory rack.
Marco assisted Alessandro in maneuvering his wheelchair into the secure bay, while Sophia followed closely behind, holding three-year-old Emma tightly against her chest.
Inside the command bay, four large high-definition monitors displayed live feeds from thirty security cameras positioned around the property.
The screens showed a terrifying sight: twelve heavily armed men in black tactical gear, bearing the crest of the New York Falcone syndicate, had breached the front courtyard. They were engaging Alessandro’s loyal bodyguards in a bloody, fast-paced firefight, slowly pushing their way toward the main entrance.
Leading the strike force was Don Carmine Falcone’s eldest son, Lorenzo—a ruthless, scarred mercenary who had taken personal charge of the hit.
"They brought heavy ordnance," Marco growled, checking the camera angles. "They're trying to breach the front oak doors with breaching charges!"
Sophia held Emma close, burying her child's face against her shoulder so the little girl couldn't see the violence on the screens. Emma whimpered softly, holding onto her yellow ribbon, but stayed remarkably quiet, trusting her mother completely.
Alessandro stared at the central monitor, his piercing gray eyes burning with a cold, terrifying intelligence. He reached out his heavily tattooed hand, resting his fingers over the master defense console on the desk.
"Lorenzo Falcone thinks he caught me trapped in a wheelchair," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper that sent a shiver down Sophia's spine. "He thinks I am defenseless inside my own house."
"Boss, your legs—" Marco started.
"My legs are paralyzed, Marco," Alessandro interrupted, his sharp jawline setting like solid steel as he looked at the surveillance screens. "My mind is not."
With a swift, precise movement, Alessandro slammed his palm onto the master red toggle on the console.

Instantly, heavy steel blast shutters slammed down over every window and outer door of the estate with a thunderous CRASH, sealing the mansion into an impenetrable steel vault. At the same time, automated defense turrets, concealed within the courtyard pillars, activated with a sharp, pneumatic hiss.
On the monitors, Lorenzo Falcone and his mercenaries froze in terror as the automated systems locked onto their positions, catching them completely exposed in the open courtyard.
