Chapter 11

"Open it, Clara," Vincent commanded softly, his deep voice carrying a strange mix of absolute authority and unexpected gentleness. "No one in this house will ever threaten you again. You have my word as the head of the Moretti family."

Clara took a shaky breath, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. With hesitant fingers, she lifted the tarnished brass latch of the box. Inside lay no sparkling jewels or stacks of untraceable currency. Instead, there was a stack of yellowed papers, a set of forged ledger entries, and a single black-and-white photograph folded carefully along the center.

Vincent stepped around the desk, his polished leather shoes making no sound against the thick Persian rug. He reached down and picked up the photograph first. As his dark eyes scanned the image, a visible chill settled over his strong features. The photograph showed a secluded docks warehouse in Chicago, dated seven years prior—the exact night his four-year-old daughter Sofia had vanished into the freezing rain. Standing near the shadows of the shipping containers was Dante, wearing a long trench coat, handing a heavy leather brief to a man whose face was partially obscured by a scar running down his jaw—a high-ranking enforcer for the rival Cassano syndicate.

"He made me sign the transfer logs every month," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible above the crackle of the fireplace. "He told me... he said if I ever showed this picture to anyone, or if I stopped signing the manifest forms for the shipments passing through the eastern estate vaults, he would make sure Ellie vanished just like your little girl did. I was so scared, Mr. Moretti. I had nowhere else to go."

Vincent’s hands did not shake, but the air in the room grew dangerously thin. He stared at the photograph, the truth unfurling in his mind like a strike of lightning. Dante had not merely been embezzling funds from the family’s legitimate transport businesses; he had orchestrated the breach that allowed the Cassanos into the perimeter seven years ago.

"Marco," Vincent spoke calmly into the gold intercom on his desk.

Within seconds, the study door opened, and Marco Vitelli stepped inside, his hand resting instinctively near his holstered sidearm. "Yes, Boss?"

"Dante is in the subterranean holding cell," Vincent said, his voice flat and terrifyingly cold. "Make sure he remains comfortable. Do not let anyone speak to him, and place double guards on the eastern vaults immediately. We have a snake in our house, Marco. And tonight, we begin to cut off its head."

Ellie looked up from the sofa, her wide blue eyes moving between Vincent and her mother. "Is Mommy safe now, big man?" she asked softly.

Vincent crouched down before the little girl, his hand resting gently on her small shoulder. "Your mommy is safe, Ellie. Because you were brave enough to ask the right question."
