Chapter 29

The federal trial of Julian Blackwood began six months later in the United States District Court in Boston. The courtroom was packed every single day with journalists, legal scholars, and spectators drawn by the sensational collapse of one of New England's oldest elite families.
I sat on the wooden gallery bench behind the prosecution table, holding Eleanor's hand. Beside us sat Arthur Sterling, who had spent the last half-year helping federal prosecutors dismantle the offshore network of shell companies Julian had used to trap his victims.
On the witness stand sat the restored silver music box. Using the mathematical sequence hidden inside Eleanor's childhood lullaby—a code based on the atomic weights of synthetic enzymes—federal technicians had opened the internal mechanism without damaging the glass micro-drive inside.
The micro-drive contained more than just Dr. Helena Vance's original laboratory research. It contained audio files recorded by my father thirty years ago, detailing every financial bribe, every corporate crime, and every covert action the Blackwood family council had committed since 1985.
Julian sat at the defense table dressed in a plain gray prison jumpsuit, his polished hair now cut short, his handsome face thin and hollow. He didn't look at the jury. He didn't look at his high-priced lawyers. Throughout the entire six-week trial, his dark, unblinking eyes remained fixed on Eleanor and me.
When the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation, the verdict was absolute: guilty on all twenty-four federal counts.
The judge, a stern woman in her late sixties, sentenced Julian to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal facility without the possibility of parole.

As the marshals stepped forward to lead him away through the heavy wooden door behind the defense table, Julian paused. He turned his head slowly, looking straight at Eleanor. His lips moved without making a sound, forming four distinct words before the iron door clicked shut behind him:
I left the key.
