Chapter 22

The high-ceilinged private office of Arthur Sterling on Beacon Hill was warm and quiet, filled with row upon row of leather-bound legal volumes and the faint scent of pipe tobacco. It was eight in the morning, and the bright autumn sun poured through the tall bay windows, illuminating the steam rising from three porcelain coffee cups resting on the mahogany desk.

Arthur Sterling sat behind his desk, holding a pair of gold-rimmed magnifying glasses over the birth certificate and my father's handwritten letter. Across from him sat Eleanor and I, with Maya fast asleep on the plush velvet sofa in the corner of the room, clutching her small pink dress in her fist.

"It is authentic," Sterling said softly, setting his magnifying glasses down onto the blotter. He looked up at us, his old eyes heavy with deep sorrow. "Your father came to me thirty years ago, Clara. He was deeply in love with Dr. Helena Vance, a brilliant biochemist who was working on early cellular synthesis. But your father was bound by strict corporate covenants within the Blackwood family trust that forbade him from divorcing your mother."

"So he hid her?" I asked, my knuckles white as I gripped the arms of my leather chair.

"He created a parallel trust," Sterling explained, sliding a thick legal folder across the desk. "The Vance-Blackwood pact. He set aside forty percent of his private fortune, including the original patents for Helena's research, into a secure foundation designated solely for Eleanor. When Helena died in that laboratory fire six years ago, the entire trust was slated to transfer to Eleanor on her twenty-fifth birthday."

Eleanor leaned forward, her skin pale, her dark eyes wide with horror as the pieces of her destroyed life began to align. "Julian didn't meet me by accident at the Cambridge symposium," she whispered, her voice shaking violently. "He hunted me down."

"He did," Sterling agreed gravely. "Julian discovered the existence of the parallel trust when your father died ten years ago. He realized that if you ever claimed your inheritance, he would lose absolute control over the Blackwood holdings. He couldn't kill you without triggering an automatic federal audit of the trust. So he engineered your financial collapse, bought your debts, and forced you into a marriage where he could legally control your mental competency."

"He didn't just want the money," I added, feeling a cold, terrifying dread settle into my stomach. "He wanted to break her mind so completely that no court in the world would ever accept her as a legitimate beneficiary. He turned our father's secret daughter into his personal prisoner."
