Chapter 19

Under Vincent’s direct orders, Clara was officially appointed as the estate’s household manager—a position of high status and authority that placed her in charge of the entire domestic staff, reporting only to Vincent himself. No longer did she wear the servant’s apron or bow her head in fear. She moved through the grand marble halls with grace, dignity, and a quiet confidence that earned her the genuine respect of everyone in the compound.

Little Ellie’s laughter echoed through the once-silent mansion. She spent her mornings playing in the expansive glass conservatory, painting colorful pictures with watercolors, and her afternoons sitting on the edge of Vincent’s massive desk, "helping" him sort through his daily correspondence with her favorite bright crayons.

The bond between Vincent and Clara deepened with every passing day. What had begun as an act of protection had blossomed into a profound, unspoken devotion. They shared quiet late-night teas in the study, talking not of crime syndicates or painful pasts, but of books, dreams, and the future. Vincent found himself smiling again—a genuine, warm smile that his men had not seen in nearly a decade.

Yet, despite the newfound peace, an unresolved tremor lingered beneath the surface. Marco’s intelligence team had arrived at the border facility in St. Gallen, only to find the compound abandoned three days prior to their arrival. The Cassano syndicate had caught wind of Dante’s downfall and moved their high-value assets into hiding.

The search was not over; it had simply moved into the silent, waiting shadows.

One evening, as a gentle rain fell outside the arched study windows, Vincent stood by the fireplace, watching Clara adjust a vase of fresh white roses on his desk. Ellie was fast asleep in the adjacent room.

"You look thoughtful tonight, Vincent," Clara said softly, stepping up beside him, no longer calling him 'Mr. Moretti.'

Vincent reached into his pocket and placed the third gold coin on the mantelpiece between them. "I was thinking about the night Ellie asked her first question. I thought I was giving a child a harmless game. In truth, she gave me back my life."

Clara smiled, leaning her head gently against his broad shoulder. "She saw the man you really are, Vincent. Before you even knew it yourself."
