Chapter 28

The air in the grand foyer seemed to freeze as the heavy crunch of gravel echoed from the driveway outside, followed by the firm, synchronized footsteps of four federal officers ascending the granite front steps.
Julian didn't look toward the door. His eyes remained fixed on Eleanor, staring at her as if she were a ghost that had suddenly materialized through the solid stone walls of his house.
"You think you've won, Eleanor?" Julian whispered, his teeth bared in a bitter, venomous snarl. "You think you can take this house, this money, and live a peaceful life with my daughter?"
"She isn't your daughter, Julian," Eleanor said quietly.
The sentence hung in the grand foyer like a falling blade. I turned my head to look at Eleanor, my heart missing a beat. Julian froze completely, his hand dropping an inch away from the silver music box.
"What did you say?" Julian breathed, his dark eyes widening in genuine, unscripted terror.
"Maya isn't yours," Eleanor repeated, her tone calm, flat, and absolute. "Before you bought my debts six years ago, before you forced me into this marriage, I was pregnant with my partner's child—Dr. David Miller, the man who died in the lab fire you set."
She took one step closer to him, leaning in until her face was inches from his. "I let you believe Maya was your child because I knew it was the only thing that would stop you from killing her. I let you think you were passing down your precious Blackwood bloodline to an heir. But she doesn't carry a single drop of your blood, Julian. She is David's daughter."
A choked, strangled sound escaped Julian's throat—a horrific sound of absolute, devastating defeat. The single lie he had built his grand empire upon, the belief that he was securing his family's future through his biological heir, dissolved into dust in a single second.

The heavy front doors swung open, and four armed federal marshals stepped into the foyer, their boots loud against the marble floor.
"Julian Blackwood," the lead officer declared, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, coercive extortion, and conspiracy to commit murder."
