Chapter 2

The high-pitched, childish voice lingered in the vast, elegant study like a sudden thunderclap.

Renzo Moretti stood frozen beside the mahogany desk, his hand suspended over his leather folder. Near the entrance, the two broad-shouldered bodyguards exchanged wide-eyed, petrified glances. In all their years serving the Castalano family, they had seen hardened syndicate bosses tremble, corrupt politicians stammer, and ruthless rivals turn pale in Vincent's presence. No human being had ever stood before Vincent Castalano and pointed a finger at his face.

Vincent slowly raised one dark eyebrow. He fixed the three-year-old girl with his famously terrifying stare—the exact look that had silenced boardrooms and sealed the fates of his enemies. His thick, dark eyebrows lowered into a deep, intimidating furrow, his sharp jawline tightened until the muscles flexed beneath his dark beard, and his head tilted slightly to one side in a posture of dangerous, quiet calculation.

Mia did not flinch. She did not back away, nor did she burst into tears.

Instead, Mia studied every detail of Vincent's terrifying facial expression with intense, analytical curiosity. She noted the heavy brow, the tight jaw, and the subtle tilt of his head.

Suddenly, Mia crossed her tiny arms over the floral embroidery of her pastel-blue princess dress. She scrunched up her small, delicate face, lowered her golden-brown eyebrows into an exaggerated frown, pursed her rosy lips, and tilted her chin in a startlingly accurate, comedic imitation of the Mafia boss.

Renzo’s mouth parted in absolute disbelief. He quickly pressed his hand over his mouth, his broad shoulders trembling slightly as he fought a desperate, heroic battle to suppress a violent burst of laughter. The two bodyguards near the door stiffened even further, their eyes darting nervously toward the floorboards.

Mia puffed out her chest under her pink tulle layers, opened her mouth, and let out a tiny, dramatic growl, attempting to drop her sweet voice into a deep rumble.

"Grrr! I'm the scary boss!" Mia announced playfully, mimicking his posture with hilarious precision.

CLOSE SHOT on Vincent's face as he slowly turned his head toward the little girl. The feared crime lord was visibly stunned. His dark eyes widened fractionally before narrowing again as he leaned his broad, tattooed frame forward, bringing his intimidating face closer to hers.

Mia immediately leaned forward too, copying his exact movement, her tiny arms still folded tightly across her ruffled shoulder straps.

Vincent's dark eyes flicked briefly toward Renzo, catching his right-hand man struggling not to burst into laughter. Vincent delivered one sharp, warning glance that instantly made Renzo straighten his posture, though a twitch remained at the corner of Renzo's mouth.

Vincent turned his cold, dark gaze back to the three-year-old girl standing between his shoes. His voice dropped into a deep, stern, and dryly amused rumble.

"Are you making fun of me, little girl?" Vincent asked.

Mia nodded her head confidently, her pink-and-blue ribbons bouncing around her high bun without the slightest hint of fear. She uncrossed one arm, pointed her small finger directly at Vincent's tightly furrowed, tattooed brow, and then crossed her arms again, recreating his intimidating scowl.

"Yes!" Mia answered cheerfully, her voice ringing with complete, unvarnished honesty. "You always make that funny face!"

One of the bodyguards near the archway hastily turned his face toward the stone column, his shoulders shaking as he bit his lip to keep from laughing aloud. Vincent stared at Mia in utter astonishment, the corners of his masculine, bearded mouth beginning to twitch despite his best efforts to maintain his legendary sternness.

Suddenly, a sharp, terrified gasp echoed from the hallway.

Sprinting through the double mahogany doors came Clara, Mia's mother. At early thirties, Clara was a hardworking housemaid at the estate—a beautiful woman with dark brown hair tied into a loose, practical bun, wearing a mint-green maid dress with short puffed sleeves, a white lace-trimmed apron tied at her waist, and a traditional white maid headpiece. Her delicate facial features were pale with sheer, unadulterated panic, her expressive brown eyes wide with terror as she saw her three-year-old daughter standing inches from the mob boss.

Clara dropped to her knees on the marble floor beside Mia, her hands trembling violently as she gently grabbed her daughter's shoulders, pulling the child slightly back.

"Mr. Castalano! Please forgive her!" Clara cried, her voice breathless, frightened, and deeply apologetic as she looked up at the towering boss, expecting an immediate explosion of dark fury. "I was folding the linens in the gallery—she slipped away from me! She didn't mean any disrespect, sir! Please don't fire us!"

Vincent remained seated on the cream velvet sofa. He raised one broad, heavily tattooed hand into the air, making a sharp, silent gesture that instantly cut off Clara's panicked apologies.

The study fell completely silent. The warm sunlight streamed through the lofty windows, illuminating the dust motes suspended in the air.

Vincent’s intimidating expression shifted into an unexpectedly thoughtful look. Slowly, deliberately, the forty-year-old Mafia king stood up from the sofa, his broad-shouldered frame towering over the kneeling maid and her daughter.

He took one heavy step forward, his polished black leather boots striking the marble with authority. Then, to the absolute astonishment of everyone in the room, Vincent deliberately crouched down directly in front of three-year-old Mia, bringing his broad, tattooed body down until his piercing dark eyes were level with hers.

Mia raised one golden-brown eyebrow, instantly copying Vincent's signature expression once more.

Vincent’s lips twitched as he struggled to maintain his composure. He looked directly into the innocent, fearless brown eyes of the little girl in the blue-and-pink dress.

"So..." Vincent spoke, his deep voice controlled, raspy, and unexpectedly playful. "...you think you can do my face better than me?"

Mia immediately crossed her tiny arms and produced Vincent's exact intimidating scowl—furrowing her brows, pursing her lips, and tilting her head with dramatic flair.

Vincent studied her miniature scowl for one long, silent second. Suddenly, the fearsome head of the Castalano family did something no one in New York had ever witnessed. Vincent perfectly imitated her exaggerated expression back at her, puffing out his bearded cheeks, lowering his dark eyebrows comically, and tilting his head right back at her.

Renzo nearly choked on his own breath, quickly turning away as a loud snort escaped him, while Clara stared at the scene in absolute, speechless shock.

Vincent leaned a fraction closer to Mia, his terrifying frown instantly melting into a mischievous, dry half-smile.

"Then you're hired..." Vincent declared, his deep baritone filled with amused, mock-serious authority. "...as my new boss."
