Chapter 5

The following morning brought a bright, crisp sunlight that illuminated the sprawling gardens and cobblestone pathways of the Castalano estate.

Inside the main entrance hall, a hilarious, unprecedented scene was unfolding.

Mia had decided that as the official "new boss" of the estate, it was her sacred duty to perform a full morning inspection of the house and security detail.

She marched down the grand marble corridor with absolute authority, her tiny cream shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. She wore her pastel-blue princess dress with its layered pink tulle skirts, her golden-brown hair styled in its high bun with fresh pink-and-blue ribbon bows bouncing with every step. In her hand, she carried a plastic toy stethoscope she had retrieved from her playroom, using it as her primary inspection tool.

Walking two paces behind her, acting as her silent, imposing enforcer, was Vincent Castalano.

The forty-year-old Mafia lord looked regal, terrifying, and towering in his bespoke black luxury suit, open black shirt, and dark burgundy pocket square. The black rose tattoos on his neck and muscular hands caught the morning light, his sharp jawline set in a mask of deadpan, stoic seriousness as he followed the three-year-old toddler through his own mansion.

Behind Vincent walked Renzo Moretti, holding a clip pad, desperately trying to maintain a professional composure while recording Mia's "official directives."

Mia stopped abruptly in front of two six-foot-four, broad-shouldered security guards standing at attention near the east wing entrance. The guards, armed with concealed sidearms and wearing matching black suits, looked down in sheer, petrified panic as the tiny girl stopped at their boots.

Mia pointed her plastic stethoscope at the guard on the left—a heavily built man named Marco.

"You!" Mia commanded in her sweet, high-pitched voice. "You look too scary!"

Marco froze, his face turning pale as he darted a desperate glance toward Vincent for guidance.

Vincent stepped forward, his massive frame towering over Marco, his dark eyes fixing on his bodyguard with cold, unblinking authority.

"You heard the boss, Marco," Vincent growled softly, his deep baritone dripping with dry humor. "You look too scary. Fix your face."

Marco swallowed hard, forcing his intimidating, scarred face into an awkward, wide, and desperate smile that looked utterly ridiculous.

Mia inspected Marco's forced smile for three long seconds. She gave a firm nod of approval. "Good! Now you give me a penny!"

Marco hastily reached into his suit pocket, pulling out a shiny quarter and dropping it gently into Mia's tiny palm. Mia beamed with radiant joy, turning around to show her treasure to Vincent.

"Look, big boss! I got money!" Mia cheered.

Vincent let out a rich, booming laugh, dropping down onto one knee on the marble floor and patting her golden-brown bun gently. "Outstanding work, Boss. You're already generating better revenue than the Brooklyn crew."

Standing near the kitchen archway, watching the entire interaction, was Clara.

She held a feather duster in her trembling hands, her mint-green maid dress pristine, her white lace apron spotless. As she watched the feared Mafia chief kneel before her tiny daughter, treating Mia with such profound, gentle protection, the tight knot of fear that had gripped Clara's heart for months finally began to melt away. For the first time since her husband's death, Clara felt a deep, overwhelming sense of security washing over her soul.

Suddenly, Renzo’s satellite phone buzzed loudly in his jacket pocket.

Renzo checked the encrypted screen, his humorous expression instantly vanishing, replaced by a grave, sharp intensity. He stepped closer to Vincent, leaning down to whisper in his ear.

"Boss," Renzo murmured quietly. "Don Carmine Falcone’s senior diplomat, Victor Vance, has just arrived at the outer security gate. He claims he has an urgent message regarding the harbor territories."

Vincent slowly stood up to his full height. The warmth in his dark eyes instantly vanished, replaced by an icy, apocalyptic calm that chilled the warm air of the hallway.

He looked down at Mia, who was happily admiring her shiny quarter.

"Renzo," Vincent ordered coldly. "Show Mr. Vance into my study."
